Israel, Iran trade accusations at Security Council meeting - CNA

ON "THE BRINK"

Addressing the emergency meeting, Iran's UN ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani insisted the Islamic Republic was exercising its "inherent right to self-defence".

"The Security Council ... failed in its duty to maintain international peace and security," Iravani said.

Therefore, Tehran "had no choice" but to respond, he said, adding that his country does "not seek escalation or war", but will respond to any "threat or aggression".

He also lashed out at Israel.

"It is time for the Security Council to shoulder its responsibility and address the real threat to international peace and security," Iravani said.

The body "must take urgent and punitive measures to compel this regime to stop a genocide against the people of Gaza".

The rising tensions come against the backdrop of Israel's six-month-old war against Hamas in Gaza, which began after the Palestinian militant group's Oct 7 attack in Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed at least 33,729 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry.

Since the 1979 Iranian revolution, Israel has been considered a sworn enemy by the Islamic Republic, which calls for Israel's destruction.

Until now, Tehran had refrained from attacking Israel head-on, and the two countries have opted instead to confront each other through third parties.

On Sunday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged restraint, telling the emergency meeting that "neither the region nor the world can afford more war."

"Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate," he said.

Guterres also repeated his condemnation of Iran's strikes on Israel, and the attack on Iran's consulate in Damascus.

"It's time to step back from the brink," Guterres said.

Australian police say Sydney knife attacker may have targeted women - CNA

Witnesses described how attacker Joel Cauchi, 40, wearing shorts and an Australian national rugby league jersey, ran through the mall with a knife. He was killed by Inspector Amy Scott, who confronted him solo while he was on the rampage.

Police have said Cauchi had mental health issues in the past and there was no indication ideology was a motive.

Violent crimes such as Saturday's stabbing are rare in the country of about 27 million people, which has some of the world's toughest gun and knife laws.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said "the gender breakdown ... was concerning" when asked on ABC Radio if it was a gender-motivated attack.

"The New South Wales Police have said they're looking at that as part of the investigation," he said.

The only man who was killed by Cauchi during the attack was a mall security guard.

The Australian national flag is flying at half-mast across the country, including at the Parliament House and Sydney's Harbour Bridge, in honour of the victims. Sydney Opera House's sails will be lit with a black ribbon on Monday evening.

Chinese state TV reported on Sunday that one Chinese citizen was among those who had died in the attack, without revealing the identity of the victim, adding that another Chinese citizen was injured.

Suspect in KL airport shooting targeted wife and has history of violence: Police - The Straits Times

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian police on April 14 launched a manhunt for a man suspected of trying to murder his wife at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in an incident that has triggered a review of security at the airport.

The police said Mr Hafizul Harawi fired two shots at his wife, Ms Farah Md Isa. One bullet struck her personal bodyguard in the abdomen and the other missed her. The bodyguard is in critical condition.

The bodyguard’s wife, Ms Siti Noraida, 28, told Malaysian news agency Bernama that her husband was assigned as a part-time bodyguard before the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

“The hospital informed me that my husband’s condition is critical... There was severe bleeding, and when he arrived at the hospital, he had difficulty breathing. However, no vital organs were hit,” the housewife was quoted by Bernama as saying.

The police’s Criminal Investigation Department director Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain told a press conference that in the incident, which took place at 1.20am, Mr Hafizul first threw two firecrackers and injured two members of the public before moving in at close range to open fire at Ms Farah.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the suspect used a 9mm semi-automatic pistol believed to have been purchased illegally from a neighbouring country.

The 38-year-old suspect fled the scene and is believed to have headed to the north of Malaysia. He has been identified as Ms Farah’s business partner, and they were in the midst of a divorce.

The police are confident he is still in the country, but more officers have been deployed at the Malaysia-Thailand border to ensure he does not escape.

The last social media post by Ms Farah with her husband was on March 4, when the family visited a mosque in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. She had hoped their marriage would last forever.

“Today, my husband took us to visit Malaysia’s Taj Mahal, with our two (little) warriors (sons). God willing, may our marriage last till we are in heaven. Amen,” said the 38-year-old owner of a tour company that specialises in Muslim pilgrimages to Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

Attempts by The Straits Times to contact her have been unsuccessful. In a Facebook post, Ms Farah said her lawyer has advised her not to make any more statements as the matter is under police investigation.

Datuk Seri Shuhaily said: “The police have classified the suspect as armed and dangerous. Anyone who spots him is urged to share the information with the police, but not to act alone.”

He said the case is being investigated as attempted murder.

He advised the public to keep their distance and call the police immediately if they see the suspect.

The police also revealed that Mr Hafizul has had reports lodged against him since 2016 and that his wife had made two reports for criminal intimidation, the latest in December 2023.

“Based on that report, the suspect was arrested, and we submitted the investigation paper (to the deputy public prosecutor), but we were then given additional instructions,” said Mr Shuhaily, noting that the incident led Ms Farah to hire bodyguards.

He said the police had also previously investigated the suspect for theft and impersonating a public officer.

Noting that this was not the first time a security breach had occurred at KLIA, he said security measures will be reviewed at the airport.

On Feb 13, 2017, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s estranged half-brother, Mr Kim Jong Nam, was assassinated at KLIA by a Vietnamese woman who covered his face with a cloth drenched in liquid VX, a chemical weapon. He died in an ambulance on the way to hospital.

Former police officer Kamal Affandi Hashim told The Straits Times that the authorities did a good job managing the shooting on April 14 without further collateral damage.

“The priority of the authorities is to save lives, not to confront the shooter. You don’t want the shooter to hide in the terminal because then you would have to shut down the entire airport,” said Mr Kamal, who is also a crime analyst.

“You don’t want him to be cornered because three things might happen: He surrenders, he commits suicide, or he opens fire into the crowd and the officers, injuring or killing others. The police can always track him down.”

He agreed on the need for a review of current security measures, saying that all stakeholders should go back to the drawing board to plug any possible weaknesses.

Israel on alert as Iran warns against responding to attack - CNA

"TAKE THE WIN"

Iran's allies in the region joined the attack, with Yemen's Tehran-backed Houthi rebels also launching drones at Israel, according to security agency Ambrey.

Lebanon's Hezbollah movement announced it had fired rockets at Israeli positions in the annexed Golan Heights around the same time, as well as a second barrage hours later.

An Israeli strike destroyed a building used by Hezbollah in Lebanon's east on Sunday, Israeli and Lebanese sources said. A Hezbollah source told AFP that there were no casualties.

The Iranian mission to the United Nations warned Washington to keep out of Iran's conflict with Israel.

The mission added on X that "the matter can be deemed concluded".

"However, should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran's response will be considerably more severe."

US media reported that Biden was looking to de-escalate.

News outlet Axios said the president had told Netanyahu he would oppose an Israeli counterattack against Iran and that the prime minister should "take the win".

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called for "calm heads to prevail", adding that UK fighter jets were among those shooting down Iranian attack drones.

NATO said it was "vital that the conflict in the Middle East does not spiral out of control".

Pope Francis called for "an end to any action which could fuel a spiral of violence".

The UN Security Council was to meet at around 2000 GMT Sunday (4am Singapore time Monday) to discuss the latest crisis at Israel's request.

G7 nations will also hold a video conference in the early afternoon to discuss the attack.

Jordan, which is located between Israel and Iran, said it had intercepted "flying objects" that breached its airspace during the attack.

Before Tehran launched its attack on Saturday, the Israeli military warned Iran it would suffer the "consequences for choosing to escalate the situation any further".

Iran had earlier seized an Israeli-linked container vessel in the Gulf, putting the whole region on alert.

GAZA STALEMATE

Meanwhile, fighting in Gaza continued. The war began with an unprecedented Oct 7 attack by Hamas against Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed at least 33,729 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry.

Late Saturday, Hamas said it had submitted its response to a truce plan presented by US, Qatari and Egyptian mediators at talks that started in Cairo on Apr 7.

Hamas said it was sticking to its previous demands, insisting on "a permanent ceasefire" and the "withdrawal of the (Israeli) occupation army from the entire Gaza Strip".

Israel's Mossad spy agency described this as a rejection of the proposal, accusing Hamas of "continuing to exploit the tension with Iran" and aiming for "a general escalation in the region".

Singapore condemns Iran's attack on Israel, 'deeply concerned' about Middle East situation: MFA - The Straits Times

SINGAPORE – The Republic condemns the recent aerial attacks on Israel, which Iran stated were in response to an attack on its diplomatic premises in Damascus on April 1, said Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on April 14.

In a statement, an MFA spokesperson said these “escalating attacks exacerbate tensions and further destabilise an already tense region”.

This follows Iran’s attack on Israeli territory late on April 13, when it launched a swarm of explosive drones and missiles.

Iran had vowed retaliation for what it called an Israeli strike on its Damascus consulate on April 1 that killed seven Revolutionary Guard officers, including two senior commanders. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the attack.

“Singapore remains deeply concerned about the volatile situation in the Middle East, and the continuing danger of the war in Gaza triggering a wider regional conflagration,” said the spokesperson.

MFA added that Singapore calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid escalatory actions.

Referring to the ongoing war in Gaza, which broke out on Oct 7, 2023, following Hamas’ attack on Israel, MFA said: “The focus should be on securing an immediate humanitarian ceasefire; the immediate and unconditional release of hostages; and the immediate, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected civilians throughout Gaza.”

The Gaza war was sparked by Palestinian militant group Hamas’ attack on Israel, which saw 1,200 people killed and 253 taken hostage, according to Israeli tallies. About 130 are still being held hostage in Gaza.

More than 33,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory offensive, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, with most of the 2.3 million population displaced and facing a humanitarian crisis.

Bodyguard injured after man shoots at wife at Kuala Lumpur airport, manhunt underway - CNA

PUTRAJAYA: A manhunt is underway in Malaysia following a shooting incident at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in the early hours of Sunday (Apr 14).

The 38-year-old assailant had opened fire on his wife at the entrance of the arrival hall in Terminal 1 at about 1.20am.

He fired two shots from about three to four metres away but missed, said Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.

One of the shots hit and seriously injured one of the woman's two bodyguards, with the bodyguard now hospitalised in critical condition.

Two members of the public were also injured when the man lit and threw firecrackers as he walked towards his wife to attack her.

Mohd Shuhaily said preliminary investigations showed that the shooting was due to a personal issue between the suspect and his wife, who is believed to be in the early stages of pregnancy.

The couple were said to be in the process of getting a divorce, he added.

Mohd Shuhaily urged the suspect to turn himself in and said that all CID personnel in neighbouring states had been roped in for the search, which will cover the country's border areas.

The man had earlier fled in a car parked at level two of Block C and is believed to be headed north.

“I advise the suspect to cooperate and surrender at any police station. Police have identified the suspect, who is dangerous and armed.

“Therefore, anyone who comes across the suspect should share the information (alert police) and should not act on their own,” he told a press conference after inspecting KLIA 1.

Police said in an earlier statement that the suspect has three criminal records - two for criminal intimidation and one for theft and impersonating a civil servant.

Mohd Shuhaily said the man's wife had previously lodged two police reports against him for criminal intimidation.

After the latest report was lodged in December last year, the man was arrested.

"We have submitted the investigation paper but there are certain instructions which need to be implemented. Following that incident, the suspect's wife hired bodyguards,” said Mohd Shuhaily.

JERUSALEM - Israel will achieve victory after having fended off an Iranian drone and missile salvo, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on April 14.

“We intercepted, we repelled, together we shall win,” he said in a brief post on X.

Iran launched a swarm of explosive drones and fired missiles at Israel late on April 13 in its first-ever direct attack on Israeli territory, risking a major escalation as the United States pledged “ironclad” backing for Israel.

Sirens wailed and Reuters journalists in Israel said they heard distant heavy thuds and bangs from what local media called aerial interceptions of explosive drones. The ambulance service said a 10-year-old boy was critically injured.

Israel’s military said more than 100 drones were launched from Iran, with security sources in Iraq and Jordan reporting dozens seen flying overhead and American officials saying the US military had shot some down.

Israel’s military spokesperson Rear-Admiral Daniel Hagari said Iran launched dozens of ground-to-ground missiles at Israel, most of which were intercepted outside Israeli borders. They included more than 10 cruise missiles, he added.

The Iranian salvo amounted to more than 200 drones and missiles so far, he noted, and had caused light damage to one Israeli military facility. He said the engagement had not ended, and Israeli forces were still intercepting incoming threats.

Iran has vowed retaliation for what it called an Israeli strike on its Damascus consulate on April 1 that killed seven Revolutionary Guards officers, including two senior commanders. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the attack. REUTERS
