Emergency adds uncertainty to Malaysia's outlook, SE Asia News & Top Stories - The Straits Times

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's shock declaration of a state of emergency on Tuesday (Jan 12) to deal with the worsening coronavirus pandemic could push the country into a political confrontation and threatens an economy struggling to find its footing.

In his biggest gamble yet since his controversial power grab in March last year, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin declared that all political activity would be suspended under the emergency, including the holding of elections and the powers of Parliament and state legislatures.
