Eight arrested for suspected Islamic State links; investigations reveal threats to Malaysia's king, PM Anwar - CNA

PUTRAJAYA: Eight people were arrested over the weekend by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for alleged links to the Islamic State militant group.

Simultaneous operations were carried out across four states on Saturday and Sunday. A former lecturer was among those arrested for suspected links to extremist and radical ideologies.

Malaysia’s Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said on Monday (Jun 24) that the six men and two women, aged between 25 and 70, were detained in Kelantan, Johor, Penang and Selangor.

Initial police investigations into the suspects revealed threats against Malaysia’s King, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, dignitaries and senior PDRM officials, he said at a press conference.

The eight suspects come from various occupational and economic backgrounds, including housewives and educated professionals.

The suspects will be held for 28 days under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, he added.

When asked if they were part of a network, Mr Saifuddin said they shared the same ideology.

“It’s one ideology, one belief stemming from the conviction that the country’s leadership is not based on the caliphate system, for example,” he said.

“When such conditions are not met, they justify actions to challenge the government; that's among the signs of their group's beliefs."

Mr Saifuddin also said that the Malaysian government remains firm that there will be “no compromise with anyone inciting, perpetrating, supporting or sympathising with extremism, radicalism and violence in this country”.

Guan Eng denies rumours of unity government talks with PAS - Malay Mail

GEORGE TOWN, June 24 — DAP national chairman Lim Guan Eng has dismissed rumours that the unity government is in talks with PAS to join the federal government.

The Bagan MP said DAP ministers confirmed that there were no such discussions at the highest levels.

“At the pre-council briefing session for government MPs yesterday in Sri Perdana, Putrajaya, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim did not mention any talks with PAS,” he said in a statement posted on his Facebook page today.

He said Anwar only expressed his unhappiness at the Opposition’s extreme politicisation of government investments especially involving BlackRock in the procurement of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) by Khazanah Nasional Bhd via its wholly owned subsidiary UEM Group Bhd and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).

“Even Saudi Arabia had links with BlackRock,” he said.

“PMX said if this logic is extended further, then Malaysia would have to break off diplomatic relations with the United States for their support of Israel,” he added, saying it does not make sense.

He said it was clear that those trying to manufacture the false impression that DAP is involved with talks to bring PAS into the federal government intended to tarnish DAP’s image.

“They have clearly forgotten their nefarious role just after the 15th General Election when they were instrumental in trying to put PAS into government by signing Statutory Declarations supporting Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister,” he said.

He reminded those in the unity government to stop harping on rumours that will confuse the people especially with the upcoming Sungai Bakap by-election in Penang.

“Otherwise, it will be no different from having your body in the unity government while your heart is outside,” he said.

Korean Air flight diverted after plane drops 26900 feet in 15 minutes; 13 taken to hospital - The Straits Times

About 50 minutes after departure, there was a warning about a fault in the pressurisation system of the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. PHOTOS: SCREENGRAB FROM GARYGARYOCP/TIKTOK

Passengers on Korean Airlines Flight KE189 arrived safely in Taichung, Taiwan, on June 23 after it was diverted the day before due to a fault, which led to 13 people being taken to the hospital, according to media reports.

The flight had departed from Incheon International Airport with 125 passengers at around 4.45pm local time on June 22.

About 50 minutes after departure, there was a warning about a fault in the pressurisation system of the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft, Korea JoongAng Daily reported.

An aircraft pressurisation system regulates the pressure level inside the aircraft.

Flight tracking website Flightradar24’s data shows the plane dropped about 26,900ft in about 15 minutes.

The flight circled back to Incheon International Airport at around 7.40pm, about three hours after it had taken off.

According to Korea JoongAng Daily, citing the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation, 15 passengers said they suffered from hyperventilation or pain in their eardrums, while 13 were taken to hospital after landing.

No major injuries were reported, it added.

The flight resumed on the morning of June 23 with a different aircraft, about 19 hours after the initial departure schedule, the daily reported, citing Korean Air.

The Korean Air spokesperson was reported as saying that the airline is currently investigating the exact cause of the diversion, and plans to put the aircraft under maintenance after an inspection.

Some passengers, who arrived at 12.24pm local time at Taichung International Airport, said they were frightened and that they would not take a flight for a while, Taipei Times reported.

A passenger, known only as Mr Tseng, said children on board were crying when oxygen masks were released, and he was afraid that the plane might hit the ground.

Another passenger, who was identified only as Ms Hsu, said she felt something was amiss as the aircraft seemed to be hovering in the air and the flight attendants remained in their seats.

She said she and her daughters put on oxygen masks when the plane began to fall, and she had an earache and headache while her daughters were crying.

Commentary: By supplying Pakistan with stealth submarines, China amps up geopolitical competition in Indian Ocean - CNA

CHINA HOPING FOR STRATEGIC DIVIDENDS

By growing its strategic footprint in the Indian Ocean, China also expands maritime routes for its energy supplies. Eighty per cent of China's oil has to pass through the Strait of Malacca - a narrow waterway between Indonesia and Malaysia that lies east of the Indian Ocean.

Chinese-run Gwadar Port on Pakistan’s southwest coast could be China's trump card in securing its interests in the Indian Ocean. Strategically located near the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping lane, Gwadar Port allows China to bypass any potential blockade in the Strait of Malacca through the Arabian Sea.

China is simultaneously strengthening Pakistan's naval muscle and developing the country's Gwadar Port. Critics see these steps as China's long-term investments that would pay strategic dividends in future.

The US Pentagon has identified Gwadar as a possible location for a future Chinese military base. With a naval presence in Gwadar, China could conduct regular patrols in the Arabian Sea.

China's longstanding strategic relationship with Pakistan poses new challenges to competitors in the race for dominance over the Indian Ocean.

UK's Manchester airport faces 'widespread disruption' after power cut - CNA

LONDON: A "significant" number of flights at the UK's third-busiest airport were being delayed or cancelled Sunday (Jun 23) after a major power cut, the airport operator said.

The Manchester Airports Group, which also operates London Stansted and the East Midlands airports, said Manchester Airport had been "affected by a major power cut in the area earlier this morning."

"This has caused widespread disruption," the group said on social media.

Power has now been restored at the international airport in the north of England, but passengers due to travel from Terminals One and Two were told to "not come to the airport until further notice" as flights were being cancelled.

Passengers for Terminal Three were told to come to the airport as normal but warned they "could be affected by delays".

Some flyers took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to describe the "chaos", with one passenger saying there was "baggage thrown on any carousel" and another saying they were "stuck on the plane".

Airline easyJet, which operates flights from Terminal One, warned of "very long queues" for security, and disruption to check in luggage, meaning passengers can only board flights with cabin bags.

The UK's travel industry has been hit by a series of disruptions in the last few years, including technical problems and industrial action affecting rail and air passengers.

Last month, a nationwide outage of immigration e-gates caused long delays for thousands of passengers.

In August last year, the country faced its worst air traffic control disruption in almost ten years due to a technical fault.

Tuan Ibrahim: No plans for PAS to join unity govt - Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 — PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man yesterday said that the party had no plans to join the ruling coalition and that no discussion was held within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.

Tuan Ibrahim said the party’s focus was to fortify its relationship with PN for any upcoming elections, local English daily New Straits Times reported yesterday.

“We are committed to strengthening the cooperation in PN to face any by-elections or elections in the future,” he told the daily.

“We will remain in the opposition bloc to provide checks and balances against the government,” he reportedly said.

Pas Ulama Council chief Datuk Ahmad Yahaya confirmed the same and said the PN Opposition bloc is now focusing on the Sungai Bakap by-election.

“No discussions have taken place. PAS and our partners in PN are focusing on contesting against Pakatan Harapan in the Sungai Bakap by-election at the moment.

“If we wanted to be friends (join the unity government), we would not be going against them (in the Sungai Bakap by-election),” he said.

Earlier yesterday, New Straits Times reported that government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil did not confirm nor deny claims of the Islamist party, PAS, joining the federal government when asked by reporters.

Fahmi said many discussions were ongoing between both groups.

He said there were discussions between several menteris besar from PAS-led states as well as members of parliament and the prime minister.

Indonesia's 'dirty noodles' are getting popular for being healthier than instant mee. But raising production isn't so easy - CNA

The two dozen workers in the factory, located in Bantul regency of Indonesia’s Yogyakarta province, use production techniques that have existed for thousands of years.

The only sign of modernity are several hydraulic presses which turn the dough into noodles. These modern machines are safer than the factory’s manual press of the past, said factory owner Yasir Feri Ismatrada, 49.

Before the old press was retired a few years ago, workers had to jump and hold on to its lever, using their weight to compress the dough inside. When the wooden lever became slippery, workers often fell and sprained their ankles or hit their head on the hard factory floor.
