Singapore doing all it can for Gaza relief efforts, the community can help too: DPM Wong - The Straits Times

SINGAPORE - The situation in Gaza is horrific with many innocent lives lost and people continuing to suffer, and that is why the Government has been doing all it can to help with global relief efforts, said Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong on March 24.

He added that the community can play its part too, no matter how big or small their contribution.

DPM Wong was speaking at the launch of Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC’s fund-raising efforts for humanitarian aid for Gaza, organised in collaboration with local charity Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation (RLAF).

He said that while Singapore’s focus has always been on helping the most vulnerable Singaporeans, it was also important to keep in mind others who live outside of Singapore who are in need.

“And during this time of Ramadan, our hearts go out in particular to the Palestinian people. Because we can all see the suffering that’s taking place,” he added.

The ongoing fund-raising efforts by the group representation constituency (GRC) will continue till March 26.

“I think it’s one concrete way where all of us can express our solidarity during this period of suffering (for those in Palestine), and show how we can respond as Singaporeans to this human tragedy and make a difference in our own way,” said DPM Wong.

About 1,000 people attended the event held at the hard court in front of Yew Tee MRT station on March 24, in conjunction with a break-fast event.

DPM Wong said Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and prayer, is a very special time for the Muslim community, and is also meaningful for all others in Singapore’s multiracial society. “We may not join all of the same activities as our Muslim friends, but we can also reflect and ‘buka puasa’ with all of you as one united people,” he said, referring to the evening meal for Muslims to break their fast.

“And when we come together, we reflect as Singaporeans how we can be appreciative for all that we have in Singapore, the peace and harmony that we enjoy in this little red dot. We think about how we can all do our part to make Singapore better, stronger and more united.”

Singapore’s ongoing Gaza relief efforts saw the third tranche of emergency aid to Gaza airdropped into the war-stricken enclave last week, where crates containing food and other essential items were parachuted in, in coordination with the Jordanian authorities.

Previously, Singapore had also worked with Egypt to deliver aid through the country’s land borders and crossings.

Citing this, Senior Minister of State for Defence Zaqy Mohamad said at the event that the Republic will monitor developments in the region, such as the preparation for a sea route, to look at other practical ways to effectively deliver aid.

Earlier in March, it was announced that the United States was working to prepare a landing jetty that would facilitate aid to Gaza by sea. Aid from Cyprus has also arrived via a maritime corridor.

“The advantage Singapore has is good diplomatic links with many countries and, certainly, there are countries that are open to partner with us to aid the people of Gaza,” Mr Zaqy, who is also an MP for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, told The Straits Times on the sidelines of the event.

Singapore has joined several Western and Arab countries, including the US, Jordan, Egypt and France, in efforts to deliver much needed supplies by plane to the 2.3 million people in Gaza.

A $6.1 million cheque was handed to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the main UN aid agency in Gaza, on March 17.

The funds are part of a record $8.1 million raised by RLAF in late 2023 to provide relief and shelter to communities in the embattled Palestinian enclave. An earlier tranche of $2 million was handed to UNRWA in November 2023.

Earlier, Singapore’s first tranche of aid to Gaza, comprising funds and supplies, was delivered to the Egyptian Red Crescent in early November 2023. The second tranche of aid, which included medicine, sanitation items and water filters, was delivered to the Egyptian Red Crescent later that month.

Russia mourns victims of deadly concert hall attack - CNA

Long lines formed in Moscow on Saturday to donate blood.

In the southwestern city of Voronezh, people were laying flowers and lighting candles at a monument to children who died there in a World War Two bombing, in solidarity with those who died in the attack near Moscow.

"We, like the whole country, are with you," the governor of the Voronezh region, Alexander Gusev, said on the Telegram messaging app.

GUNMEN

Putin said 11 people had been detained, including the four gunmen, who fled the concert hall and made their way to the Bryansk region, about 340km southwest of Moscow.

"They tried to hide and moved towards Ukraine, where, according to preliminary data, a window was prepared for them on the Ukrainian side to cross the state border," Putin said.

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said the gunmen had contacts in Ukraine and were captured near the border.

Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, triggering a major European war after eight years of conflict in eastern Ukraine between Ukrainian forces on one side and pro-Russian Ukrainians and Russian proxies on the other.

China vows to safeguard its territorial integrity after South China Sea incident - CNA

BEIJING: China's defence ministry warned the Philippines against "provocative" actions and said on Sunday (Mar 24) that the country would safeguard its territorial sovereignty, a day after an incident in disputed waters of the South China Sea.

"We warn the Philippines to stop making any remarks that may lead to the intensification of conflicts and escalation of the situation, and stop all infringing and provocative actions," the defence ministry said in a statement.

"If the Philippines repeatedly challenges China's bottom line, China will continue to take firm and decisive measures to firmly safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests," the statement continued.

The remarks came after China's coast guard said had it taken measures against Philippine vessels in disputed waters near the Second Thomas Shoal and Spratly Islands a day before, actions that the Philippines had called "irresponsible and provocative".

The incident included the use of water cannon against a civilian boat hired to resupply troops, the Philippine task force on the South China Sea said in a statement on Saturday.

'Concerned M'sians' object to Umno's support for store boycott - The Star Online

PETALING JAYA: A group of “concerned Malaysians”, including academicians, activists and ex-politicians, has condemned Umno’s decision to support a boycott of KK Super Mart over the controversial socks issue.

The group of 23, whose members span across all ethnicities, faiths and regions of Malaysia, including Sarawak and Sabah, said that Umno has “proposed an excessive punishment bordering on bullying, extremism and political opportunism”.

The group said in a statement that they “totally reject” Umno’s decision to support its Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh in the boycott of the convenience store chain.

Among those who signed the group’s statement were academicians Prof Dr Mohd Tajuddin Mohd Rasdi, Dr Lim Teck Ghee, and Dr James Chin, as well as former Sungai Benut MP Tawfik Ismail, lawyer Siti Kasim, and writers Dr KJ John and ES Shankar.

Their statement follows Umno’s decision to support Dr Akmal, who has publicly campaigned for a boycott of all KK Super Mart stores after socks bearing the word “Allah” were found in one of its stores last week.

“We, Malaysians of all races and religions, accept the apologies made by KK Super Mart, whether by virtue of their negligence or dereliction in the display of the (socks) with the name “Allah”.

“We, Malaysians of all races and religions, uphold the investigation of the authorities and await the final outcome and punishment by the authorities, not by Umno extremists,” the group said.

“We, Malaysians of all races and religions, honour the values of all our religions in forgiveness, compassion, tolerance and understanding,” it added.

The group also said they were “extremely disappointed” with Umno, whom they said could have been a good partner in the unity government alliance.

This was since Umno had once “saved the nation from a coalition of extremist politics”, they said.

Zelenskyy says Putin seeks to divert blame for concert shooting - CNA

Earlier, Putin said 11 people had been detained following the attack, including the four gunmen. "They tried to hide and moved towards Ukraine, where, according to preliminary data, a window was prepared for them on the Ukrainian side to cross the state border," Putin said.

Zelenskyy said Putin should use his own men to fight terrorism at home instead of invading Ukraine.

"They have brought hundreds of thousands of their own terrorists here, on Ukrainian land, to fight against us, and they don't care about what is happening inside their own country," he said.

"Yesterday, as all this happened, instead of dealing with his fellow Russian citizens, addressing them, the wimp Putin was silent for a full 24 hours, thinking about how to tie this to Ukraine. It's all absolutely predictable," Zelenskyy said.

UK royal Kate 'enormously touched' by support after cancer announcement - CNA

FRONT PAGES

"KATE, YOU ARE NOT ALONE," The Sun tabloid's front page declared, saying she received a "huge outpouring of love and support". The rival Daily Mirror went with "KATE REVEALS CANCER SHOCK" and shared her remarks about how she had to explain the news to her children Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5.

The Daily Telegraph quoted the princess as saying: "Cancer came as huge shock", but noted she said she is "going to be OK".

The Daily Mail rounded on people who have speculated on her health, asking: "How do all those vile online trolls feel now?"

Rumours and gossip on social media, in newspapers and even some US talk shows had abounded since Kate's January surgery, although her Kensington Palace office had announced at the time that she would be absent from royal engagements while she recovered.

On Friday, messages of support poured in for Kate, including from King Charles, Prince Harry, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and US President Joe Biden.

Sunak said Kate had "shown tremendous bravery" with her statement, adding she "has been unfairly treated by certain sections of the media around the world and on social media".

Kate's diagnosis was also big news internationally.

"Catherine's Cancer Diagnosis Puts UK Royals on Even More Uncertain Terrain," said the New York Times, noting that the grave health concerns of both the king and Kate are stretching an already slimmed-down monarchy.

Charles, who took the throne in September 2022 after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth, underwent a corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate at the same hospital as Kate in January.

Buckingham Palace then revealed in February that the 75-year-old king was to have treatment for cancer, meaning he has had to postpone his public royal duties.

Security experts say Islamic State claim for Russian concert attack is credible - CNA

LONDON: A claim of responsibility by Islamic State for a massacre of Russian concertgoers near Moscow appears to be plausible and fits with a pattern of previous marauding attacks by militants, security analysts said on Saturday (Mar 23).

One leading expert said, however, it was unusual and striking that the assailants had formed and executed an escape plan instead of pursuing their rampage to the point of being gunned down.

Islamic State, also known as IS or ISIS, issued statements claiming responsibility for Friday evening's attack in which Russian investigators said 133 people were killed, and published a photograph of the alleged gunmen.

Russia has not said who it believes was behind the mass shooting, but has stated, without providing evidence, that the perpetrators had contacts in Ukraine. It said the gunmen fled by car and were captured hours later near the Ukrainian border. Ukraine, defending against Russia's invasion since 2022, has emphatically denied any involvement.

Adam Dolnik, a Czech security expert who has studied past Islamist attacks in India, Kenya, Russia and elsewhere, said the Islamic State claim appeared credible, although "that will not stop the Russians from leveraging this for their foreign policy agenda vis-a-vis Ukraine and the West".

Dolnik said in a telephone interview that attacks by marauding gunmen were a typical modus operandi in recent years for IS and al Qaeda.

He noted Islamic State has a record of previous attacks against Russia, including the bombing of a 2015 flight from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to St Petersburg and a 2022 attack on the Russian embassy in Kabul. Earlier this month, Russia's FSB said it foiled an attack on a Moscow synagogue by ISIS-K, an affiliate of the group.

"If you line up all these things together, then I think it's completely conceivable that this would be an IS attack," he said.
