Food is considered a primary exposure route for PFAS chemicals.

New research indicates that consumption of white rice, coffee, eggs, and seafood correlates with higher levels of toxic PFAS chemicals in human plasma and breast milk.

The study, which involved samples from 3,000 pregnant women, suggests that coffee and white rice may be more contaminated than other foods.

Additionally, there is a notable association between red meat consumption and elevated levels of PFOS, a particularly harmful PFAS compound.

The study's authors emphasise the widespread presence of PFAS and the numerous ways they can infiltrate the food supply.

PFAS, a class of approximately 16,000 compounds used in various products for their water, stain, and heat resistance, are notorious for not breaking down naturally, leading to their accumulation in humans.

These "forever chemicals" have been linked to severe health issues, including cancer, birth defects, and thyroid disease.

French political leaders react to upset election result - CNA

"I say tonight with gravity that depriving millions of French people of the possibility of seeing their ideas brought to power will never be a viable destiny for France.

"Tonight, by deliberately trying to paralyse our institutions, Emmanuel Macron has not simply pushed the country towards uncertainty and instability, he has deprived the French people of any response to their day-to-day difficulties for many months to come.

"In the midst of a purchasing power crisis, with insecurity and disorder hitting the country hard, France is deprived of a majority, of a government to act, and therefore of a clear course to turn France around".

Sri Lanka pilgrims flee as elephant runs amok - CNA

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: A Hindu religious festival in Sri Lanka ended in chaos after an elephant in the procession panicked, with 13 people in the crowd injured as they fled, police said on Sunday (Jul 7).

Video footage shared on social media showed one of the elephant's keepers trying to pull the agitated animal by its tail in a desperate attempt to control it, while screaming devotees lining the street rushed to escape.

The images show a parade of elephants covered in red, blue and gold robes from trunk to tail, in front of a large crowd while cymbals clanged.

Thirteen people were taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries in Kataragama, 280km south of the capital Colombo, a police spokesman said.

A spokesman for the state-run Kataragama hospital said on Sunday, the day after the incident, that all the injured had been discharged.

Elephants are considered sacred in Sri Lanka, but animal cruelty laws are rarely enforced.

Animal rights groups have criticised the widespread use of elephants at temple ceremonies in Sri Lanka.

There have been instances when the animals have gone berserk at parades involving loud music and fireworks.

In August 2023, dozens of pilgrims jumped into a lake in the central city of Kandy to escape five agitated young elephants. Several people were hurt and one woman was hospitalised.

In 2019, at least 17 people were injured when elephants ran amok at a temple festival in Colombo.

Official records show there are about 200 domesticated elephants in the island nation, along with a wild population of around 7,500.

The government has banned the capture of wild elephants but dozens of calves have been stolen in recent years, often after their mothers were killed by their captors.

Hamas says it's waiting for Israeli response on ceasefire proposal - CNA

CAIRO, Egypt: Hamas is waiting for a response from Israel on its ceasefire proposal, two officials from the Palestinian group said on Sunday (Jul 7), five days after it accepted a key part of a US plan aimed at ending the nine-month war in Gaza.

"We have left our response with the mediators and are waiting to hear the occupation's response," one of the two Hamas officials told Reuters, asking not to be named.

The three-phase plan was put forward at the end of May by US President Joe Biden and is being mediated by Qatar and Egypt. It aims to end the war and free around 120 Israeli hostages being held by Hamas.

Another Palestinian official, with knowledge of the ongoing ceasefire deliberations, said Israel was in talks with the Qataris.

"They have discussed with them Hamas' response and they promised to give them Israel's response within days," the official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters on Sunday.

Israel's government made no immediate comment on the timing of its deliberations.

Hamas, which controls Gaza, has dropped a key demand that Israel first commit to a permanent ceasefire before signing an agreement. Instead, it said it would allow negotiations to achieve that throughout the six-week first phase, a Hamas source told Reuters on Saturday on condition of anonymity because the talks are private.

A Palestinian official close to the peace efforts has said the proposal could lead to a framework agreement if embraced by Israel and would end the war.

US Central Intelligence Agency Director William Burns will travel to Qatar next week for negotiations, a source familiar with the matter said.

The conflict, triggered by an Oct 7 attack on Israel by Hamas fighters, has claimed the lives of more than 38,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials.

Hamas killed 1,200 people and took around 250 hostages in the worst assault in Israel's history, according to official Israeli figures.

Malaysia's opposition PN retains Penang state seat with comfortable majority in by-election - The Straits Times

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s opposition alliance Perikatan Nasional (PN) retained its state assembly seat in a Penang by-election on July 6 with a comfortable victory, reflecting growing unhappiness with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s ruling coalition and its waning support among the Malay majority.

Mr Abidin Ismail, 56, from Parti Islam SeMalaysia, one of the members of the PN alliance, won the Sungai Bakap seat with 14,489 votes, or about 58.6 per cent of the valid votes.

His rival, Dr Joohari Ariffin from Pakatan Harapan (PH), received 10,222 votes (41.3 per cent) in the straight fight in the Malay-majority ward of 39,279 voters.

The total turnout was 63.4 per cent.

The by-election for the Sungai Bakap constituency in southern mainland Penang was called after incumbent PN assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff – whom Mr Abidin was a special officer to – died on May 24 due to stomach inflammation.

The 58.6 per cent of the vote garnered by Mr Abidin indicates PN’s rising support following its narrow victory in the August 2023 state election, where Mr Nor Zamri secured 52.6 per cent of the vote with a slim majority of 1,563 ballots.

While Datuk Seri Anwar’s PH coalition failed to reclaim the seat, which it had held for three consecutive terms before the 2023 election, this will not have any impact on the 40-seat Penang state assembly where it controls a comfortable two-thirds majority.

Mr Abidin’s strong poll numbers suggest that concerns over the rising cost of living, exacerbated by recent cuts to diesel subsidies in June and increased utilities rates under the Anwar administration, had steered voters to support the opposition, said analysts.

The government’s attempt to ease cost-of-living concerns with a three-sen (one Singapore cent) reduction in the price of chicken eggs, announced by Mr Anwar on June 17, has done little to improve public sentiment.

Political analysts say PN’s victory was not unexpected as the voter sentiment in mainland Penang, especially among the Malay electorate, would not have shifted much within less than a year of the previous state election.

“Not many Chinese voters turned out, and voter sentiment still favours PN because various external issues like diesel subsidy targeting were effectively used by the opposition during the by-election campaign, while the government’s rebuttals and clarifications on these issues did not reach the grassroots voters effectively,” said University of Malaya sociopolitical analyst Awang Azman Pawi.

Penang PH chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the Chinese voter turnout, estimated at 49 per cent, was a significant 13 per cent drop from the 2023 state polls.

“As for the Indian community, there was no change and turnout remained the same,” he said.

In Sungai Bakap, 59.4 per cent of the voters are Malay, 22.5 per cent Chinese and 17.4 per cent Indian.

Mr Abidin had in early July expressed confidence in gaining votes not only from the Malays but from other races as well.

BowerGroupAsia political analyst Vyshnav Menon said: “PN’s victory indicates a loss of support from PH’s longstanding non-Malay voter base, which makes up a sizeable portion of the electorate.

“The loss of support could also be due to growing disillusionment and voter apathy among the PH voter base over the slow pace of reform by the government.”

Mr Chow said the coalition had failed to persuade voters on national, state and local issues that are important to the electorate.

“It is nothing to do with the candidate’s (problem). It’s the national issues, the subsidy, perceived inflation, cost of living, and the burden the people have to face with all this,” he said, adding that a post-mortem will be conducted to analyse the campaign’s weaknesses and strengths, and the reasons for the loss.
