Plans for Thai maid to inherit $3.7 million in assets from French boss hit a snag - The Straits Times

A Thai maid was to inherit her late French boss’ assets worth as much as 100 million baht (S$3.7 million), including a villa-style hotel in Koh Samui.

But the plan was put on hold when the authorities found potential legal breaches after scrutinising the shareholding structure of her boss’ company GVNE, which owns the luxurious property, reported Bangkok Post.

Ms Catherine Delacote, 59, was found dead on April 29 in her Koh Samui villa in a suspected case of suicide. A gun was found at the scene.

The Nation reported that Ms Nutwalai Phupongta, who had worked for Ms Delacote for 17 years, was not at the villa when her boss was found dead on a bed beside the swimming pool. She rushed to the villa when she received a call from the pool cleaner.

When the police arrived at the scene, the 49-year-old maid showed them a message sent by her late boss on messaging app Line.

Ms Delacote reportedly stated in the message that she would bequeath to Ms Nutwalai her villa, 0.32ha of land beside the villa, a luxury car, some jewellery and cash.

She added that she would leave two other villas to her ex-husband, and asked Ms Nutwalai to look after her three kittens.

Ms Delacote also settled the internet and utility bills, paid the maid’s salary, and wired another 500,000 baht to the maid to cover funeral expenses.

The police do not suspect foul play so far, but investigative unit head Dusit Kaysornkaew said officials are checking if Ms Nutwalai could inherit the assets right away.

During their investigations, they learnt that Ms Delacote was the sole authorised director of GVNE, and held a 49 per cent stake in the company.

The other two shareholders are Thai nationals – a man with a 35 per cent stake and a woman with a 16 per cent stake.

In Thailand, foreigners are not allowed to own more than 49 per cent of a property.

The police are probing if Ms Delacote had used Thai proxies illegally in this case.

The Interior Ministry can sell a company’s assets if it is found to have included a Thai proxy illegally, Bangkok Post reported, citing lawyer and former politician Niphit Intharasombat,

Apart from this legal hurdle, Ms Nutwalai is also likely to need the consent of the two Thai shareholders before the assets can be transferred to her, Bangkok Post reported.

'Every region is affected': Shanmugam lays out 'worrying' global drugs situation - CNA

Even first-world countries in Europe “have been hard hit”, he said, with their ports described as “drug hubs” and “safe terrain for narcos”.

In the European Union, half of all homicides and more than a quarter of illegal firearms seizures are linked to drug trafficking, he added.

“Members can just consider just how many lives have been lost,” said Mr Shanmugam, pointing to the Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium and the United Kingdom as examples.

In Belgian city Antwerp, there have been hundreds of shootings, grenade attacks, fires and bombings in the last decade, with many linked to gang-related violence to do with the cocaine trade, said Mr Shanmugam.

Antwerp's mayor has described the situation as a much bigger threat than the 2016 Brussels bombings that killed 32 people.

“When terrorists attack, it becomes big news," said Mr Shanmugam. "But with drug violence, it gets ignored, even though it is much bigger and a more continuous threat, which affects many more people. And really, this should be taken more seriously.”

Belgian customs seized a record amount of cocaine last year, and they were not able to burn the drugs quickly enough, said Mr Shanmugam.

“Customs officials now tell the media that they will never win the war against the cartels,” he continued.

He then highlighted a United Nations report on how 18 out of 21 countries in Latin America are the main sources for the transit of cocaine.

In Mexico, murders, abductions and forced disappearances happen almost every day because of turf wars between drug cartels, said Mr Shanmugam.

Nearly 450,000 people have been killed since 2006, and a "significant number" are believed to be linked to drugs and the drug trade, he added.

Stormy Daniels testifies she had sex with Trump, defence attacks her credibility - CNA

NEW YORK: Porn star Stormy Daniels described her 2006 encounter with Donald Trump in unflattering terms at his criminal trial on Tuesday (May 7), testifying she tried not to think about the sex while it took place and feared it would become public.

For several hours Daniels, 45, offered riveting details on the witness stand about her encounter with Trump, 77, and the hush-money deal she reached to stay quiet about it ahead of the 2016 election when he won the White House.

She told jurors that her life descended into "chaos" after the arrangement was made public in 2018, saying she was ostracised and harassed at her home.

"Who do you understand Mr Trump to be referring to as horse face and sleazebag in this post?" prosecutor Susan Hoffinger asked her as she displayed a social media post by Trump.

"Me," Daniels replied.

Daniels' testimony provided fodder for Trump's lawyers to seek a mistrial, arguing that details, such as her statement that Trump did not wear a condom, served no purpose other than to inflame the jury.

Justice Juan Merchan denied that request but agreed that some of her testimony ran too far afield.

Trump's lawyers attacked her credibility and grilled her about inconsistent statements she has made over the years about her time with Trump.

Daniels also conceded that she "hates" Trump and wanted to make money off her story. Her explanation for why she went public after seven years of silence and denials also was unclear.

Trump, the Republican candidate for president again this year, did not react as he watched from the defence table. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of falsifying business records to cover up a US$130,000 hush money payment to Daniels and denies having sex with Daniels.

His legal team has suggested that Daniels was angling for a spot on "The Apprentice", a popular reality TV show then hosted by Trump, a New York real estate mogul.

Daniels confirmed that she hoped he would cast her on the show following their encounter.

"This was a very big day, a very revealing day. As you see their case is totally falling apart," Trump told reporters outside the courtroom at the end of the day.

The trial resumes on Thursday when Daniels will again take the stand.

Iran's capacity to move oil reliant on Malaysian providers, US official says - CNA

SINGAPORE: The United States sees Iran's capacity to move its oil as reliant on service providers based in Malaysia, with oil being transferred near Singapore and throughout the region, a senior US Treasury official said on Tuesday (May 7).

The US Treasury is increasing its focus on financing for militant groups routed through Southeast Asia, including through fundraising efforts and illicit sales of Iranian oil.

The official told reporters in a background briefing that the United States was trying to prevent Malaysia from becoming a jurisdiction where the Palestinian militant group Hamas could both fundraise and then move money.

"We are concerned about Hamas' capacity to fundraise in the region, including in Malaysia, so want to have a direct conversation about those concerns," the official said.

The official said there was a "concerning uptick" in attempts by Iran and its proxies to raise funds in the region, sometimes through charities.

"It's appalling that they seek to take advantage of the outpouring of support for the Palestinian people to siphon money for their violent and destabilising activities," said the official, while declining to name the suspect charities.

Brian Nelson, the Treasury undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, and Treasury general counsel Neil MacBride are in Singapore and Malaysia from Monday until Thursday.

The department said the visit was to advance its work in countering financing and revenue generation by Iran and its proxies.

The official said the United States saw Iranian oil being transferred near Singapore and throughout the region.

"The capacity of Iran to move its oil has relied on sort of these types of service providers that are based in Malaysia. So we want to have direct conversation with Malaysians about that."

Last December, the US Treasury imposed sanctions on four Malaysia-based companies it accused of being fronts supporting Iran's production of drones.

The official also said that sanctions and export controls against Russia were seeing progress, adding the Russian oil price cap was reducing Moscow's capacity to profit from oil sales while preserving the stability of global energy markets.

Insurance and other maritime service providers operating in Singapore have warned of evasion of the price cap on Russian oil, complaining that it is difficult to confirm whether paperwork promising oil is bought at or below the US$60 cap is accurate.

DFC in Malaysia: New fried chicken alternative after KFC boycotts - MS News

DFC alternative chain opens in Malaysia following wave of KFC boycotts

Towards the end of last month, more than 100 Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) outlets shuttered in Malaysia in response to the ongoing wave of pro-Palestine boycotts.

Recently, however, a new player with an uncannily similar name has entered the Malaysian market: Darsa Fried Chicken, or DFC.

While the alternative chain attracted a large crowd on its opening day, some customers were upset after learning that its prices are steeper than that of KFC’s.

Opened its first DFC store at Rawang, Malaysia on 29 April

On 29 April, DFC took to Facebook to announce the opening of its first branch at Rawang, a town in Selangor.

An advertisement in the store stated that the chain was”100% Muslim Bumiputra” or 100% indigenous Muslim.

Many customers turned up on DFC’s opening day, with long queues forming at the store.

According to Sin Chew Daily, the Rawang outlet gave away free fried chicken to its customers.

Sin Chew also said that the DFC chain is apparently founded by Syeikh Muhd Zainul Asri, a local religious priest. He has said that he is dedicated to creating a 100% Muslim local enterprise, and his goal is for DFC to replace KFC as a new generation of fast food.

Netizen calls out DFC for having higher prices compared to KFC

However, the store’s opening was also quickly marred by controversies.

On DFC’s Facebook page, a netizen pointed out that its prices were higher than that of KFC’s, Malaysian news site Oriental Daily News noted.

The chain then responded that the Chinese, whom they labelled “type C”, were attempting to manipulate the public’s attitude towards DFC. It also urged customers to try its offerings in person, stressing that they should not be influenced by others.

The eatery’s comments have angered some customers, who accused the chain of being “racist”. Some also said they’d stay away due to what the eatery has said.

DFC has apologised for its “unintentional mistake” and said it would avoid such comments in future. It also said it would in future only respond to matters regarding operations.

“We welcome all our clients at various walks of life regardless of race or religion. Hopefully the Malaysia we love is safe and peaceful,” said the statement.

'Not a welcoming situation': Over 15000 refugees, asylum seekers lack legal right to live or work in Hong Kong - CNA

Behind Ms Naveed’s desk sits a rack full of colourful bags, each unique and intricately handwoven by the women in the programme.

“Whenever we sell these products that they make, they do get a little bit of allowance from all these classes, and they can go home and buy something for themselves,” she said.

“You can imagine how expensive Hong Kong is. When we give them the money for their hard work, they feel like they've earned something.”

Mr Girimana, who was a trained lawyer in Burundi, has now taken on the role of community partnerships officer at the Justice Centre Hong Kong.

He rallies a team of volunteers, who are also refugees, to lead a food distribution drive at Kowloon Union Church every week.

“A good deed is never wasted, so being here, not being able to help my family, I was really motivated by that principle. So let me give my strength and my time to people in need,” he said.

“I know one day there will be somebody who will be helping my family as well, so that's what motivates me.”

REFUGEE CHILDREN’S SCHOOL WOES

Those who flee to Hong Kong with their children face another problem: The children are not allowed to go to school as they have no legal right to remain in the city.

Once they reach the school-going age of six, the Immigration Department may consider their school applications on a case-by-case basis.

From 2021 to end-January this year, a majority – 573 – of about 660 placement requests were approved.

One such young asylum seeker, Adrian (not his real name), fled South Asia with his family when he was six years old.

Despite his illegal status, he could attend school with permission from the Immigration Department. His family’s non-refoulement claims have yet to be substantiated after 16 years.

Adrian eventually managed to get the funding and qualifications to enrol in university, where he studies health sciences.

However, unlike his peers, he cannot take on internships, which is increasingly a criterion to graduate under most tertiary programmes.

Adrian told CNA that without internships under his belt, he cannot offer proof to future employers of any accomplishments in his field – if he can even find an employer willing to take him on.

On the bright side, some colleges have exercised flexibility, and allowed refugee students to take on more research papers and work with their professors.

One such institution that made adjustments was Hong Kong Baptist University, which admitted two refugee students over the last five years. Its academic registrar Sally Ching told CNA that teachers can consider asking such students to work on projects under the supervision of faculty members.
