PETALING JAYA – Former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad is conscious and not in critical condition, says his close aide, rejecting claims on social media.

He is still in Institut Jantung Negara (IJN), or National Heart Institute, and “we will issue an update if there is any significant development”, said the aide, when contacted on Feb 19.

Photos released by the aide show the 98-year-old reading a newspaper and doing some writing.

“Dr M is currently being treated and is in the process of recovering from infection,” the aide said when contacted.

The photos were also shared on Dr Mahathir’s social media.

It was reported on Feb 13 that Dr Mahathir would be taking a period of rest following treatment at the institute for an infection after he was admitted on Jan 26.

The 98-year-old’s state of health was revealed during proceedings for his defamation suit against Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi last week.

Dr Mahathir’s lawyer, Mr Mior Nor Haidir Suhaimi, in an application to postpone proceedings, told the court that his client had been admitted to IJN. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Putin gives North Korea's Kim Jong Un a Russian limo as a gift - CNA

Russia has stepped up ties with North Korea and other countries hostile to the United States such as Iran since the start of the war with Ukraine - relations that are a source of concern to the West.

The United States has accused North Korea of supplying Russia with artillery shells and missiles used in Ukraine. Moscow and Pyongyang deny the US accusations but vowed last year to deepen military relations.

The Russian-made limousine was delivered to Kim's top aides by the Russian side on Feb 18, North Korea's official KCNA news agency said.

"SPECIAL PERSONAL RELATIONS"

Kim's sister "courteously conveyed Kim Jong Un's thanks to Putin to the Russian side, saying that the gift serves as a clear demonstration of the special personal relations between the top leaders", KCNA reported.

South Korea's foreign ministry said it was closely monitoring the cooperation between Russia and North Korea while urging both countries to comply with UN Security Council resolutions.

"Security Council sanctions on North Korea prohibit directly or indirectly supplying, selling or moving all transportation vehicles internationally categorized as HS Code 86 through to 89 regardless of their origin to North Korea including luxury cars," ministry spokesperson Lim Soo-suk told a media briefing.

According to the carmaker's website, the car is Russia's first full-size luxury sedan. It is also Putin's presidential car.

Taiwan drives away Chinese coast guard boat as front-line tensions rise - The Straits Times

Ms Kuan Bi-ling, head of Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council, told reporters in Taipei on Feb 20 that it was common for Chinese and Taiwanese tourist boats to accidentally enter the other side’s waters. PHOTO: REUTERS

TAIPEI – Taiwan on Feb 20 drove away a Chinese coast guard boat that entered waters near its sensitive front-line islands, raising tensions a day after China’s coast guard boarded a Taiwanese tourist boat in a move that a Taiwan minister said triggered “panic”.

A Chinese coast guard boat, numbered 8029, entered Taiwan’s waters near Kinmen on the morning of Feb 20, Taiwan’s coast guard said in a statement. It said it dispatched a boat and used radio and broadcast to drive away its Chinese counterpart, which left the area an hour later.

The Taiwanese coast guard said it would continue to use radar, surveillance and patrols to ensure “harmony and safety” near the waters of the Taiwan-controlled Kinmen islands, which are close to China’s shores.

Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory to be reunified despite the island’s rejection, has been wary of efforts by Beijing to ramp up pressure on Taipei following the election in January of Mr Lai Ching-te as president, a man Beijing views as a dangerous separatist.

China announced on Feb 18 that its coast guard would begin regular patrols and conduct law enforcement activity around the islands of Kinmen, following the death of two Chinese nationals fleeing Taiwan’s coast guard after entering waters too close to Kinmen.

Six Chinese coast guard officers on Feb 19 boarded a Taiwanese tourist boat carrying 11 crew members and 23 passengers to check its route plan, certificate and crew licences, leaving around half an hour later, Taiwan’s coast guard said.

“We think it has harmed our people’s feelings and triggered people’s panic. That was also not in line with the interest of the people across the strait,” Ms Kuan Bi-ling, head of Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council, told reporters outside Parliament in Taipei on Feb 20.

Ms Kuan said it was common for Chinese and Taiwanese tourist boats to accidentally enter the other side’s waters.

“Boats like these are not illegal at all,” she said.

Kinmen is a short boat ride from the Chinese cities of Xiamen and Quanzhou and has been controlled by Taipei since the defeated Republic of China government fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war with Mao Zedong’s communists, who set up the People’s Republic of China.

Kinmen is home to a large Taiwanese military garrison, but it is Taiwan’s coast guard that patrols its waters.

Taiwanese Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng told reporters that to avoid a further rise in tensions, the military would not “actively intervene” in the incident.

“Let’s handle the matter peacefully,” he said. “Not escalating tensions is our response.”

Kinmen was the site of frequent fighting during the height of the Cold War, but is now a popular tourist destination, although many of its islets are heavily fortified by Taiwanese forces and remain off limits to civilians.

China says it does not recognise any restricted or banned zones for its fishermen around Kinmen.

China has in recent years regularly carried out military drills around the island as it seeks to assert its sovereignty claims and pressure Taipei.

Taiwan rejects China’s sovereignty claims.

A senior Taiwan security official, speaking on condition of anonymity as there was no authorisation to speak to the media, told Reuters that the government believed China did not want to turn what had happened around Kinmen into an “international incident”.

The official said Beijing seized on the Kinmen incident involving the deaths of the two Chinese nationals as an “excuse” to further pile pressure on Mr Lai, the president-elect.

The pressure has included Taiwan losing one of its few remaining diplomatic allies, Nauru, to China and a change in a flight path in the Taiwan Strait.

Still, China was likely to continue increasing pressure on Taiwan ahead of Mr Lai’s May 20 inauguration, the official added.

Chinese state media said Quanzhou Red Cross officials, accompanied by family members, arrived on Kinmen on Feb 20 to bring home the two survivors from the boat that had overturned when it tried to outrun Taiwan’s coast guard last week. REUTERS

South Korea trainee doctors stage walkout over medical school quotas - CNA

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who had pleaded with doctors not to take people's lives and health hostage, ordered emergency measures such as the use of telemedicine, more operations at public hospitals and the opening up of military clinics.

About 76 per cent of South Koreans back the plan for more medical students, a Gallup Korea poll showed last week, amid concerns about an acute shortage of doctors for paediatrics, emergency units and clinics outside the greater Seoul area.

South Korea's population of 52 million had 2.6 doctors per 1,000 people in 2022, far below the average of 3.7 for countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

But doctors and medical student groups say there are already sufficient physicians and an increase in numbers could lead to unnecessary medical procedures and undermine the finances of the national health insurance plan.

They have also criticised the government for failing to consult and for "demonising" existing doctors.

Park Dan, head of the Korea Interns and Residents Association, said on Facebook he submitted his resignation on Monday because of what he called the government's "messy policy".

'I will continue my husband's fight', says Navalny's widow - CNA

MOSCOW: Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, said on Monday (Feb 19) that she would continue her husband's fight for a free Russia and called on supporters to battle President Vladimir Putin with greater fury than ever.

"I want to live in a free Russia, I want to build a free Russia," Navalnaya said in a video message entitled "I will continue the work of Alexei Navalny".

"Vladimir Putin killed my husband," Navalnaya said, adding that she would work with the Russian people to battle with the Kremlin to create a new Russia.

The Kremlin has denied involvement in his death.

"By killing Alexei, Putin killed half of me - half of my heart and half of my soul," Navalnaya said.

"But I still have the other half, and it tells me that I have no right to give up. I will continue the work of Alexei Navalny, continue to fight for our country."

"I urge you to stand next to me," she said. "I ask you to share the rage with me. Rage, anger, hatred towards those who dared to kill our future."

Navalnaya accused the Russian authorities of hiding Navalny's body and of waiting for traces of the Novichok nerve agent to disappear from his body.

"We know exactly why Putin killed Alexei three days ago," she said. "We will tell you about it soon. We will definitely find out who exactly carried out this crime and how exactly. We will name the names and show the faces."

Russia has yet to establish official cause of Navalny death, spokeswoman says - CNA

Navalny's spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, said that his 69-year-old mother, and lawyers were told that the official verification of the cause of death had been extended and that it was unclear how long it would take.

"The cause of death is 'undetermined'," Yarmysh said, adding that the Russian authorities were lying and stalling.

His mother and lawyers were not allowed into the morgue on Monday in the Arctic town near the prison colony where the authorities said he dropped dead, Yarmysh said.

"Asked if Alexei's body was there, the staff did not answer," said Yarmysh.

The death of Navalny, a former lawyer, robs the disparate Russian opposition of its most charismatic and courageous leader as President Vladimir Putin prepares for an election that will keep him in power until at least 2030.
