Japanese ex-soldiers found guilty in landmark army sexual assault case - CNA

FUKUSHIMA: A court in Japan found on Tuesday (Dec 12) three ex-soldiers guilty of sexually assaulting a female colleague and gave them suspended jail terms, bringing to a close a rare case for a country where victims rarely come forward to speak out against abuse.

The court in Fukushima sentenced Shutaro Shibuya, Akito Sekine and Yusuke Kimezawa to two years in prison, but suspended for four years, for their "forced indecency" on Rina Gonoi during a military drill in 2021.

In a socially conservative country where the #MeToo movement failed to gain much ground, Gonoi, 24, took to YouTube last year to share her account of the assault after an internal military probe into it was dropped for lack of evidence.

The public attention from the viral video and a petition signed by more than 100,000 people forced the defence ministry to acknowledge the assault and apologise.

This March, prosecutors reversed an earlier decision and charged the three men, who have been dismissed from the military.

Gonoi, who was in court on Tuesday for the verdict, told AFP in an interview in February that her decision to go public was "desperate rather than brave".

She said that after fulfilling a childhood dream and enlisting in 2020, she experienced daily harassment.

"When walking down the hallway, someone slaps you on your hip, or holds you from behind," she told AFP.

"I was kissed on the cheek, and my breasts were grabbed."

Then, during a drill in 2021, she says three colleagues pressed her to the ground, forced apart her legs and each repeatedly pressed their crotches against her while others watched and laughed.

Chinese President Xi visits Vietnam to strengthen ties, boost influence in region amid geopolitical rivalry - CNA

Mr Xi is expected to push for the building of a China-Vietnam community with a shared future, which involves bringing Hanoi closer to Beijing's orbit.

“The last visit by Xi Jinping was (in) 2017, and he actually suggested that. But Vietnam disagreed,” said Emeritus Professor Carlyle Thayer of the University of New South Wales Canberra.

“But China is pushing for common destiny, common security, (and) common development. This is the platform and programme of China's new world order, in which the US would just be relegated to being one of the players.”

TRADE, INFRASTRUCTURE AND ECONOMIC TIES ON THE AGENDA

The talks in Hanoi will also touch on trade, infrastructure and economic ties.

Hanoi hopes to attract more Chinese investment and tourists, and increase its agricultural exports across the border.

While the territorial dispute in the South China Sea will also be high on the agenda, some observers do not expect much progress on this front.

Malaysia's PM Anwar reshuffles Cabinet one year in - The Straits Times

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia announced a major Cabinet reshuffle on Dec 12, with new ministers being appointed to key portfolios including in finance, foreign affairs and health.

The move comes one year into Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration, which faces slowing economic growth and criticism that promised reforms are not being implemented fast enough.

Amongst the key changes is the appointment of Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan, who will assist Datuk Seri Anwar, who is also Finance Minister. Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah was the former chief executive officer of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), the national pension fund.

Speaking to the media after the announcement, Mr Anwar said that a second finance minister was required to address the country’s economic issues.

“My personal view… is that the Ministry of Finance must have a strong and professional team to ensure that we are on the right track and the focus on the economy.

“And he (Mr Amir) has shown enough competence, ability, and has managed the EPF in a very impressive and satisfactory manner,” he said.

Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad returns to the Health Ministry, taking over from Dr Zaliha Mustafa. An MP from Parti Amanah Negara, Dr Dzul, as he is popularly known, served as health minister from May 2018 to Feb 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Dr Zaliha has been appointed as the new Federal Territories Minister.

Human Resource Minister V Sivakumar has been replaced by Mr Steven Sim Chee Keong, who had assisted Mr Anwar as his Deputy Finance Minister II, prior to his new appointment.

Japan PM to Fire Second Minister in Funds Scandal, Asahi Says - Bloomberg

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is set to fire a second top member of his cabinet and as many as three ruling party officials, the Asahi newspaper said, as a scandal over slush funds threatens the viability of his government.

Among those to be replaced is Trade Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, who has helped to drive Japan’s plans to regain its lost status as a world-class chipmaker. Two senior officials in Kishida’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party are set to be replaced and a third may be added to the list, the paper said, a day after reporting Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno was on his way out.

Israeli tanks reach centre of Khan Younis in southern Gaza - The Straits Times

GAZA/CAIRO - Israeli tanks battled their way to the heart of Khan Younis on Dec 10 in a major new push into the main city of the southern Gaza Strip, as health authorities in Hamas-run Gaza said about 18,000 Palestinians had been killed in the war.

Israeli leaders said dozens of Hamas fighters had surrendered, encouraging more of them to do so, but the Palestinian militant group denied this, calling the claim “false and baseless”.

Residents of Khan Younis said tanks had reached the main north-south road through the city after intense combat through the night that had slowed the Israeli advance from the east. Warplanes were pounding the area west of the assault.

The air rumbled with the constant thud of explosions and thick columns of white smoke rose over the densely crowded city, filled with people displaced from elsewhere in the enclave.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who has unsuccessfully pushed for a ceasefire in Gaza, said the enclave was in collapse.

“I expect public order to completely break down soon and an even worse situation could unfold including epidemic diseases and increased pressure for mass displacement into Egypt,” he said.

Earlier on Dec 10, near a city-centre police station, the constant rattle of machinegun fire could be heard. Streets there were deserted as morning broke apart from an old woman and a girl riding on a donkey cart.

“It was one of the most dreadful nights, the resistance was very strong, we could hear gunshots and explosions that didn’t stop for hours,” a father of four displaced from Gaza City and sheltering in Khan Younis told Reuters. He declined to be identified for fear of reprisals.

At the opposite end of the Gaza Strip, in northern areas where Israel had previously said its forces had largely completed their tasks, residents also described some of the most intense fighting of the war so far.

“I daresay it is the strongest battle we have heard in weeks,” said Mr Nasser, 59, a father of seven sheltering in Jabaliya after his house was destroyed in Beit Lahiya, another northern area.

Explosions could be heard as he spoke.

“We are not going to leave Jabaliya regardless of everything. We shall die here as martyrs or they will leave us alone.”

Israel has vowed to annihilate Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since 2007, after militants burst across the fence on Oct 7 and went on a rampage through Israeli towns, gunning down families in their homes, killing 1,200 people and seizing 240 hostages.

Japan industry minister says reviewing finances amid funds scandal: Report - CNA

TOKYO: Under-fire Japanese industry minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said he would continue in his cabinet duties and will fully disclose his finances at an appropriate time, local media reported on Sunday (Dec 10), amid allegations of undeclared funding that has embroiled several top lawmakers.

"I have not been told anything to the contrary at this time, so I would like to continue with my duties," Nishimura told reporters on Sunday at a news conference in Ibaraki Prefecture, north of Tokyo, according to the Nikkei newspaper and Kyodo.

"I am closely examining my own political financing report, and would like to provide a thorough explanation at the appropriate time," the news outlets reported him as saying.

The Asahi and Mainichi newspapers reported earlier on Sunday that Nishimura, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) policy chief Koichi Hagiuda are among cabinet members set to be replaced by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida following media reports that they may have pocketed more than ¥100 million (US$689,988) of fundraising proceeds that were left off the books.

Tokyo prosecutors are looking to investigate lawmakers after the current session of parliament ends on Wednesday, local media reported.

Public support for Kishida's government has slid to a record low, partly due to voter worries over rising costs and looming tax hikes.
