Myanmar rebels say dozens of junta forces surrender, captured - CNA

A junta spokesperson, Zaw Min Tun, on Tuesday, accused the rebel groups of "destroying the whole country" and said reports of captured military posts were "propaganda".

"The enemies retreated after they lost soldiers. We are trying to combine small posts strategically," he said.

The spokesperson said fighting was going on in Shan, Rakhine and Kayah states. He did not comment on reports of junta forces surrendering.

Fighting has also been reported in Chin State in the northwest, where 43 Myanmar soldiers crossed into the Indian state of Mizoram after a rebel attack, a police official in Mizoram said.

Most of the Myanmar soldiers were flown by Indian forces to another point on the border and handed back to Myanmar authorities, said an Indian security official who declined to be identified.

Myanmar's military-appointed president last week said the country was at risk of breaking apart because of an ineffective response to the rebellion by fighters the generals denounce as "terrorists".

The military has for decades said it is the only institution capable of holding diverse Myanmar together. Critics of military rule dismiss that and call instead for a democratic, federal system.

Taiwan's opposition parties join forces for presidential election - CNA

TAIPEI: Taiwan's two leading opposition parties said on Tuesday (Nov 14) they would join forces for January's presidential election, but they have not decided which candidate will be at the top of the ticket.

Kuomintang (KMT) - the island's leading pro-Beijing political group - and the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) have been in discussion for weeks over an alliance, with two candidates tussling over who should run in the Jan 13 polls.

KMT's Hou Yu-ih has been polling neck-in-neck with TPP's Ko Wen-je, who has performed better than expected as a third-party candidate.

The two sides struck "a cooperation agreement, creating a new record in Taiwan's political history", KMT heavyweight and former president Ma Ying-jeou told reporters.

"This cooperation will enable mutual assistance between the two parties in future elections and other aspects, making it a very memorable day for both parties in Taiwan."

The parties agreed to have three experts, picked by Ma as well as both parties, evaluate polls conducted from Nov 7 to 17, with the results of the leading candidate due to be announced on Saturday.

Ko hailed the agreement as "a historic moment".

"Regardless of the outcome, and no matter who is the presidential or vice presidential candidate, we must work together hand in hand to ensure peace and stability in the Republic of China," said Hou, referring to Taiwan's official name.

Previous talks between the parties had seen the candidates disagree on how to pick the presidential candidate, with KMT favouring an "open primary" and Ko preferring opinion polls.

During a briefing with foreign media last month, TPP's Ko said an alliance with KMT under those rules would be akin to a "forced marriage".

A poll released on Monday by local outlet United Daily News showed vice president Lai Ching-te, the candidate for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), as the frontrunner with 26 per cent of the popular vote.

Ko came in second with 21 per cent, while Hou took 18 per cent.

Israel raids Gaza's Al Shifa Hospital, urges Hamas to surrender - CNA

Israeli forces have waged fierce street battles against Hamas fighters over the past 10 days before advancing into the centre of Gaza City and surrounding Al Shifa.

Israel has sworn to destroy Hamas in retaliation for the militants' cross-border assault into Israel on Oct 7. Israel says Hamas killed 1,200 people in the rampage and took more than 240 hostage.

In the West Bank, a separate Palestinian enclave not controlled by Hamas, Palestinian Authority Health Minister Mai Alkaila said Israel was "committing a new crime against humanity, medical staff and patients by besieging" Al Shifa.

"We hold the occupation forces fully responsible for the lives of the medical staff, patients and displaced people in Al Shifa," Alkaila said in a statement.

DIRE CONDITIONS

Hamas says 650 patients and 5,000 to 7,000 other civilians are trapped inside Al Shifa hospital grounds, under constant fire from Israeli snipers and drones. Amid shortages of fuel, water and supplies, it says 40 patients have died in recent days.

Thirty-six babies are left from the neo-natal ward after three died. Without fuel for generators to power incubators, the babies were being kept as warm as possible, lined up eight to a bed.

Palestinians trapped in the hospital dug a mass grave on Tuesday to bury patients who died and no plan was in place to evacuate babies despite Israel announcing an offer to send portable incubators, Ashraf Al-Qidra, Gaza's health ministry spokesman, said.

Qidra said there were about 100 bodies decomposing inside and no way to get them out.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was deeply disturbed by the "dramatic loss of life" in the hospitals, his spokesman said. "In the name of humanity, the secretary-general calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire," the spokesman told reporters.

Medical officials in Hamas-run Gaza say more than 11,000 people are confirmed dead from Israeli strikes, about 40 per cent of them children, and countless others trapped under rubble.

Around two-thirds of Gaza's 2.3 million people have been made homeless, unable to escape the territory where food, fuel, fresh water and medical supplies are running out.

Foxconn founder Terry Gou qualifies to run for Taiwan president - CNA

TAIPEI: Terry Gou, the billionaire founder of major Apple supplier Foxconn, has collected three times the amount of signatures needed to qualify to run in Taiwan's presidential elections, the government said on Tuesday (Nov 14).

In a statement, Gou thanked his backers for their "enthusiastic support" and vowed to work hard to achieve "peace across the Taiwan Strait".

Gou announced his bid in August, saying he wanted to unite the opposition and ensure the island did not become "the next Ukraine", blaming the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for taking Taiwan to the brink of war by antagonising China which claims the island as its own territory.

Gou, who stepped down as Foxconn chief in 2019, had to gather around 300,000 voter signatures by Nov 2 to qualify as an independent candidate, according election regulations.

The election commission said he got more than 900,000 valid signatures. He now has until next Friday to formally register his candidacy with the election commission.

Gou, 73, is one of four candidates in the election, due to be held in January. Opinion polls show he is the least favoured candidate, well behind front-runner, Lai Ching-te of the DPP and who is currently vice president.

Gou has kept a low profile since a Chinese newspaper last month implied a tax probe into Foxconn's operations in China was due to Beijing's unhappiness with his campaign, given he could split the opposition vote and ensure victory for Lai.

China's government detests Lai and views him as a separatist. He says only Taiwan's people can decide their future and has repeatedly offered talks with China which Beijing has rebuffed.

While China's government has not confirmed the Foxconn investigation, Lai has assailed Beijing for targeting the firm. Gou has not commented on the matter.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Wellington Koo, head of Taiwan's National Security Council, said China "definitely" did not want Gou running given he could split the opposition vote.

"Aren't we all waiting to see if Terry Gou will run until the end?" he said.

The other two opposition candidates have shown little interest in wanting to work with Gou, and are instead talking to each other about cooperating against Lai.

Foxconn says Gou no longer has anything to do with the company's day-to-day operations, though he remains its largest single shareholder.

Asked on an earnings call on Tuesday about potential political risks from Gou's election bid, Foxconn Chairman Young Liu said Gou had the right to make his own decisions, but added that the company has "prepared for all possible cases".

"I wish him the best. That's all I can say," Liu added.

Gaza's embattled main hospital buries patients in mass grave - CNA

International aid agencies speak of hundreds of thousands of people displaced and a rolling humanitarian catastrophe.

Israel has urged Palestinians to flee south from the heavy combat in the north of the besieged territory, and has agreed to daily pauses in military operations around specified "corridors" to allow the passage of fleeing civilians.

But escaping the fighting is dangerous and wounded Palestinians told AFP how they were hit by a strike on their way south.

"I walked around three to four kilometres while I was bleeding," said Hasan Baker, whose head and left hand were bandaged. "There was no possibility for any ambulance to enter the area.

"We didn't have any weapons," he added. "We are civilians, we were moving from one place to another according to the instructions of the (Israeli) occupation."

HOSTAGE TALKS

Israeli leaders have so far insisted there will be no broader ceasefire until hostages are released, but Qatar is mediating talks on a possible deal to free hostages.

Abu Obeida, a spokesman for Hamas's military wing, said Monday that a possible deal would involve the release 100 Israeli hostages in return for 200 Palestinian children and 75 women held in Israeli prisons.

"We informed the mediators we could release the hostages if we obtained five days of truce ... and passage of aid to all of our people throughout the Gaza Strip, but the enemy is procrastinating," Abu Obeida said in an audio statement.

Biden said he was "somewhat hopeful" the Qatar-mediated talks could lead to a deal.
