Canada PM Trudeau and wife Sophie separate after 18 years of marriage - CNA

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie said on Wednesday (Aug 2) they were separating in an unexpected announcement that appeared to mark the end of the couple's 18-year high-profile marriage.

The couple had talked frankly in the past about difficulties in their relationship and in recent years were seen less often together in public.

Trudeau, 51, and Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, 48, were married in May 2005 and have three children, aged 15, 14 and nine. On their anniversary in 2020, he described her as "my rock, my partner, and my best friend".

For Trudeau, there are also painful historical parallels. His father, former prime minister Pierre Trudeau, separated from his wife, Margaret, in 1977, when he was in office.

The development is one of the biggest personal crises for Trudeau since he became prime minister in 2015, especially since he often stresses the importance of family life.

The couple made the announcement a week after Trudeau unveiled a massive cabinet shuffle in a bid to boost the fortunes of his Liberal Party, which is trailing in the polls. Aides said he was determined to lead the Liberals into the next election, which must be held by October 2025.

"Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate," Trudeau said on Instagram. Gregoire Trudeau posted an almost identical message on her own Instagram account.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp said Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, one of Trudeau's closest allies, would brief members of the cabinet later on Wednesday.

The CBC also said Trudeau was likely to speak publicly about the separation this week.

Trudeau's office said the two had signed a legal agreement, stressing that the couple would focus on raising their children. The family will go on vacation together next week.

Gregoire Trudeau will be moving into separate accommodation in Ottawa but plans to spend plenty of time with the children in Rideau Cottage, the prime minister's official residence, to ensure they have as normal an upbringing as possible, said a source familiar with the situation.

The source, who requested anonymity because of the extreme sensitivity of the situation, said the couple would have joint custody of the children.

MEDIA DARLINGS

Gregoire Trudeau, an advocate for gender equality who studied commerce at university, was working as a reporter when she met Trudeau in 2003. They married two years later.

Trudeau was only 43 when he became prime minister in late 2015 and the sharply-dressed couple quickly captured the attention of the world media.

In October 2015, the New York Post dubbed her "the hottest first lady in the world".

Vogue magazine ran a glowing profile of the two in its January 2016 issue, complete with photos of them embracing. A long piece in the magazine about Trudeau said he "shocks some with his public displays of affection toward his wife".

In the early years after Trudeau took office, he and Sophie were often seen together at social functions and on foreign trips. In February 2018, during a visit to India, the two of them dressed in colourful costumes most days, prompting derisive comments back home.

Trudeau, though, made clear even before he became prime minister that the two had faced challenges, writing in his autobiography Common Ground in 2014 that "our marriage isn't perfect, and we have had difficult ups and downs".

In recent years, Gregoire Trudeau has curtailed joint appearances with her husband and signs of stress were clear.

On their wedding anniversary last year, she said in a social media post that "we have navigated through sunny days, heavy storms, and everything in between and it ain't over".

She went on: "Long-term relationships are challenging in so many ways".

The two of them did travel to London in May for the coronation of King Charles and were together when US President Joe Biden visited in late March.

As recently as Monday, Trudeau was still wearing his wedding ring.

More community nurses join the healthcare sector amid increased need for senior care - CNA

She added that the nurses do basic health assessments for patients flagged by social partners and come up with a holistic care plan for them. A lot of collaboration with partners is required, and care goes beyond health, she said, adding that the care delivery model cannot depend on just nurses.

“It's very challenging that … care is not only about the health aspect, there are also social aspects,” she said, adding that care coordinators help with coming up with a plan for the residents.

NEED FOR INDEPENDENCE

She added that in a community setting, nurses have to exercise a lot of independent clinic judgment and have to be highly skilled in assessing and determining a patient’s care needs.

This is opposed to being in an acute hospital setting, which is a “very structured” environment, she said.

“The doctors are there, people are there, so you can rely on somebody. But in the community, I rely on myself and my community partners to get a care plan and to get things moving for the seniors,” she said.

Ms Leong also said that being a community nurse takes several skills on top of years of experience.

“As a community nurse, you need to be brave. You need to be very independent. You need to have a lot of communication skills. You need to be not afraid to talk to people,” she said.

The experience, skills and independence the role requires may act as a barrier to the community nursing industry, said Ms Ng Woei Kian, assistant director of nursing in TTSH’s community health team.

"Generally, our current nurses who join us …  do have a certain number of years of experience - because that needs to be built up."

However, Ms Ng says she has seen increased interest from those looking to make the switch to community care.

Taiwan FM says conflict with China would have 'disastrous results' - CNA

As Taiwan gears up for January's presidential election, Wu said the island was seeing a "more sophisticated" disinformation campaign to influence its 23 million-strong population.

"What China has been doing in engaging in cognitive warfare is to change the thinking of the critical minority here in Taiwan - to vote the other way so they can change the outcome of the election," he added.

Wu is part of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), perceived as more pro-United States than the opposition Kuomintang Party.

The DPP administration is headed by President Tsai Ing-wen, who is in her final term in office and is hated by the Chinese leadership for her refusal to accept that Taiwan belongs to China.

"TAIWAN MIGHT BE NEXT"

Relations between Taiwan and China have plunged since Tsai's election in 2016, with Beijing refusing to engage with Taipei.

Global attention on cross-strait tensions has spiked in the past year, which Wu attributes to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"(The international community) look around ... and then realise Taiwan might be the next one. They look at the Chinese track record of threatening Taiwan," he said, pointing to a much-cited timeline of 2027 as a possibility for a Chinese invasion.

US officials have said they believe China would not have the military capability to undertake such an operation before then.

Taiwan is also watching China's internal political situation "with caution" after the sudden removal of Qin Gang as foreign minister. Beijing has offered no explanation for his dismissal, and he has not been seen in public for more than a month.

"This is an environment that we need to be very careful in doing our observations. We do not want to become a scapegoat of Chinese troubles," Wu said.

Taiwan has seen near-daily incursions of Chinese warplanes around its air defence zone and patrolling naval vessels since last August, when then-US House speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei in a trip that enraged Beijing.

The frequency is "putting Taiwan in a situation where our defence depth is compressed, where our response time is shortened, where the military threat is more serious than ever", Wu said.

Moral support and military assistance, such as the US$345 million aid package announced by the Pentagon at the weekend, is appreciated.

However, Taiwan does not "count on the US to fight a war" for them.

"We understand that this is our place, this is our country, this is our sovereignty and it is our democratic way of life ... Therefore, defending Taiwan is our own responsibility," Wu said.

"We will not give it up for anything at all."

Recent Beijing rain heaviest since records began 140 years ago: Weather service - The Straits Times

BEIJING – Deadly rain that pummelled China’s capital in recent days was the heaviest since records began 140 years ago, Beijing’s weather service said on Wednesday, as a massive cleanup operation began.

Millions of people have been hit by extreme weather events and prolonged heatwaves around the globe in recent weeks – events that scientists say are exacerbated by climate change.

The Beijing Meteorological Service said the Chinese capital has just experienced the “heaviest rainfall in 140 years”, which is as long as the city’s authorities have kept records of the weather.

“The maximum value of rainfall recorded during this storm, 744.8mm, occurred at the Wangjiayuan Reservoir in Changping,” the service said, adding that the largest volume previously recorded was 609mm in 1891.

The rainstorms that hit Beijing and neighbouring Hebei province have claimed at least 20 lives.

The epicentre of flooding shifted to Hebei on Wednesday.

In Beijing’s Fangshan district – on the border between the capital and Hebei – an AFP team saw a park that had been completely flooded, with tonnes of rubbish that had been washed away by torrential rain stuck near a bridge.

The area was “extremely dangerous” on Tuesday, a police officer said.

Journalists also saw a military vehicle with caterpillar wheels on its way back from the worst-affected areas.

And AFP saw an ambulance, a rescue boat and a police car heading to Zhuozhou, a hard-hit district of Hebei.

Aung San Suu Kyi's pardon part of Myanmar junta's attempt to seek legitimacy: Former UN expert - CNA

“They think that reducing sentences for Aung San Suu Kyi and the president U Win Myint will first of all get some of the support of the people, and more importantly, get them international recognition,” she said.

“It’s like a coating, a veneer, so that the international community can recognise them as a legitimate government of Myanmar.”

She noted that the military junta does not have control over the country, with over 50 per cent of the country under the control of the local ethnic groups.

Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing had acknowledged that much of the nation is not under full military control, with fighting continuing in Sagaing, Magway, Bago and Tanintharyi regions, as well as Karen, Kayah and Chin states.
