'Ageless granny' shares her secret to youthful looks: 22 years of exercising - STOMP

"My waist size was 27 inches when I was 20, and now it is 25 inches," said the 60-year-old Chinese woman in an interview with Qianjiang Evening News.

Looking half her age with her toned body and youthful looks, Ms Bao Xiaoling, from Jiangsu province in eastern China, calls herself an "ageless granny".

The title comes from being in a group with seven other women who maintain daily fitness routines in their 50s.

Ms Bao is a pensioner as well as a part-time cardio trainer at five gyms, reported Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation.

Her envious physique was achieved through 22 years of disciplined fitness training.

Around the age of 38, Ms Bao saw that she could not fit into her clothes. This prompted her to attend an aerobics course, which at the time was offered in most gyms in China. 

When other members pointed out that her exceptional aerobics form surpassed even that of their coach, she took an aerobics instructor certification exam which she passed, reported the South China Morning Post.

Ms Bao's determination to stay fit means waking up at 7.30am to work out before having her breakfast, and exercising with weights between 3pm and 4pm every day.

Her fans, mostly in their 20s, follow her daunting lifestyle and training routines in the hope of achieving similar results.

Ms Bao said that keeping fit does not have an age limit.

"My biggest lesson from my 20 years of fitness training is that exercise brings confidence, health and a young mentality," she said.

Missing submersible on Titanic expedition: What we know so far - CNA

Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a 77-year-old French explorer, is another person reportedly on board. He is the director of underwater research at a company that owns the rights to the Titanic wreck.

A former commander in the French navy, he was both a deep diver and a minesweeper. After retiring from the navy, he led the first recovery expedition to the Titanic in 1987 and is a leading authority on the wreck site.

The fifth person reportedly on board is Stockton Rush, the founder and CEO of OceanGate.

"It is an amazingly beautiful wreck," Rush told Britain's Sky News of the Titanic earlier this year.

Rush became the youngest jet transport rated pilot in the world when he obtained his DC-8 Type/Captain's rating at the United Airlines Jet Training Institute in 1981 at the age of 19, according to his biography on OceanGate's website.

What might have happened?

Alistair Greig, a professor of marine engineering at University College London, said that submersibles typically have a drop weight, which is "a mass they can release in the case of an emergency to bring them up to the surface using buoyancy".

"If there was a power failure and/or communication failure, this might have happened, and the submersible would then be bobbing about on the surface waiting to be found," Greig said.

Another scenario is a leak in the pressure hull, in which case the prognosis is not good, he said.

How might it be recovered?

If the Titan has gone down to the seabed and cannot get back up under its own power, options are very limited, Greig said.

"While the submersible might still be intact, if it is beyond the continental shelf, there are very few vessels that can get that deep, and certainly not divers," he said.

Even if they can go that deep, he doubts they can attach to the hatch of OceanGate's submersible.

David Concannon, an adviser to OceanGate, told the Associated Press on Monday that officials are working to get a remotely operated vehicle that can reach a depth of 6,000m to the site as soon as possible.

Washington’s game plan moving forward has to involve continuing these high-level meetings and using them to drive progress that is practical and tangible, said experts. 

“So meetings are just meetings. The question is, can you translate those meetings into practical work on challenging issues?” asked Dr Medeiros, noting that Beijing’s words are often in contradiction with its deeds.

“I think that that is going to be the real key to determine whether or not the relationship is on a new and more constructive trajectory, or whether both sides are effectively just using the remainder of the year to buy time to get past Xi Jinping's visit to APEC, and then we're going to be back at intense, unpredictable competition.”

Tuesday's talks between the two governments is "a stress test on whether genuine partnership between Berlin and Beijing is still possible", Thorsten Benner, director of the Global Public Policy Institute, told AFP.

"It's open as to whether Germany continues to play the game of pretending there is broad agreement with Beijing... or whether it chooses a new path of straight talk and limiting the final statement to areas where there is a genuine path forward for cooperation," he added.

Spiegel magazine said that "finding the right and appropriate way to deal with China is almost impossible".

China has been accused of stirring regional instability with threats against Taiwan and of rights abuses against Uyghurs, while refusing to distance itself from Russia's Vladimir Putin. On the other hand, it is "important to continue to have a relationship of trust" with Beijing, Spiegel noted.

"Managing this balancing act without suffering a hernia is a real challenge" not just at Tuesday's talks, but "in the years and decades to come", it said.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, one of the most strident critics of Beijing's human rights policies, has signalled that the way to handle the delicate situation was to boost cooperation with China on areas on which both sides can agree, such as the climate.

But on economic issues, Scholz's government has repeatedly underlined that ending reliance is the key.

Speaking at a major German industry event on Monday, Scholz said the "G7 has no interest in preventing China's economic rise".

"At the same time, we are looking carefully at preventing dangerous economic reliance in the future."

Addressing the same event, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg noted that many had previously thought that buying gas from Russia was "a purely commercial decision, only to learn the hard way".

"We must not make the same mistake once again with other authoritarian regimes, not least China," he warned.
