Don't betray Barisan Nasional because you were not picked for Malaysia GE15: Ahmad Zahid tells politicians - CNA

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has warned former Members of Parliament (MPs) who have not been chosen as candidates for the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15) against betraying the coalition.

This came after several senior figures were dropped as the coalition unveiled its candidates in the peninsula on Tuesday (Nov 1).

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the president of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), said: "Don’t even think about betraying the party directly or indirectly.”

“If this happens, it means that they are ungrateful because all this while, they have been … occupying positions for a long time thanks to UMNO and BN party tickets."

In what may be a reference to caretaker federal territories minister Shahidan Kassim, Ahmad Zahid said: “Don’t even try to close the operational rooms (and) give statements that tarnish the reputation of their own party.”

“They need to realise that it only reveals the truth about their attitude towards the party and citizens need to evaluate such political personalities for themselves,” the BN chairman added.

On Monday, Mr Shahidan wrote on Facebook that all the BN operational rooms in his Arau constituency have been closed and that all the UMNO and BN flags have been lowered.

“Tonight is the saddest night … First time in history,” said Mr Shahidan.

According to Free Malaysia Today, Mr Shahidan plans to defend his Arau seat despite being dropped by BN, adding that he will choose a party that is supportive of Muafakat Nasional, the pact between Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) and UMNO.

South Korea PM urges police to explain response to Halloween crush emergency calls - CNA

The transcripts appear to confirm the accounts of witnesses, who told Reuters they saw some police directing traffic on the main road but few or no officers in the crowded pedestrian alleyways and side streets.

Roughly 100,000 people were estimated to be in Itaewon on Saturday, an area known for its hills and narrow alleys. There were 137 police officers there at the time, the authorities have said.

Police went to the scene for four out of the 11 calls, a police official told reporters. It was not immediately clear why they did not deploy officers on the other calls or what safety measures they took after arriving.

"When someone dials 112, it is when the situation is very urgent and the help of police or action is desperately needed," Han said, referring to South Korea's emergency police hotline.

The release of the transcripts fuelled further criticism of missteps by the police that may have been a key factor leading up to the crush that has become the deadliest accident since a 2014 ferry sinking that killed 304 people, mainly high school students who drowned amid botched rescue operations.

Opposition members of parliament called for the immediate dismissal of the national police chief and the interior minister.

National Police Commissioner General Yoon Hee-keun on Tuesday acknowledged crowd control at the scene was "inadequate" and promised a thorough internal investigation.

South Korea PM urges police to explain response to Halloween crush emergency calls - CNA

SEOUL: South Korea's Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said on Wednesday (Nov 2) police will have to explain how they responded after receiving multiple emergency calls hours and minutes before a Halloween party crush killed more than 150 people in Seoul.

The crush on Saturday night killed 156 and injured 151, leaving 29 in serious condition. At least 26 citizens from 14 countries were among the dead.

Tens of thousands of young revellers had crowded into narrow streets and alleyways of the popular Itaewon district for the first Halloween festivities in three years virtually free of COVID-19 restrictions.

"The police must conduct thorough inspections and provide a clear and transparent explanation to the public," Han said at the televised beginning of a task force meeting on the disaster.

A transcripts of emergency calls released by the police on Tuesday showed the first warning of a possible deadly crush roughly four hours before the disaster.

Police received 10 other similar calls before the chaos was known to have turned fatal, according to the transcripts.

Emergency calls reveal growing desperation before South Korea Halloween crush - CNA

'VERY DANGEROUS'

"People are falling down on the streets, looks like there could be an accident, it looks very dangerous," another caller said at 8:33pm, according to the police transcript.

The latest call released by the police came at 10:11pm, minutes before people packed into one particularly narrow and sloping alley began to fall over each other shortly before 10:30pm.

"(People) will get crushed to death here. It's chaotic," the transcript of that call says, noting that screams were heard over the phone.

Police went to the scene for four out of the 11 calls, a police official told reporters. It was not immediately clear why they did not deploy officials on the other calls or what safety measures they took after arriving.

"Those things are all under inspection now, so it's difficult for me to answer at this point," a National Police Agency official said when asked by Reuters about responding to four calls.

The official did not elaborate on the contents of the transcripts.

"The police will speedily and rigorously conduct intensive inspections and investigation on all aspects without exception to explain the truth of this accident," police commissioner Yoon told a news conference earlier.

Shanghai Disney visitors told to stay home after Covid-19 case, Foxconn ups bonuses - The Straits Times

SHANGHAI - Several Shanghai residents received fresh stay-at-home orders and mandatory testing notices on Tuesday as authorities raced to trace contacts linked to a Covid-19-positive woman whose visit to the city’s Disney Resort prompted its temporary lockdown.

In the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou, meanwhile, Apple iPhone manufacturer Foxconn announced a big increase in bonuses to stem an exodus of workers rattled by coronavirus curbs at its vast facility there, as China’s strict zero-Covid-19 policy exacts a rising toll on the world’s No.2 economy.

Rising unease in China’s commercial hub of Shanghai comes as the country’s daily local case count hit 2,719.

It is a small figure by global standards but its highest level since Aug 17.

It has prompted other cities such as Guangzhou and Dandong to tighten measures, although Zhengzhou unexpectedly eased its quasi-lockdown.

Visitors to Shanghai Disneyland were barred from leaving on Monday until tests cleared them of Covid-19 after an infected person was traced to the theme park.

This was the second time people have been locked inside due to China’s zero-tolerance virus approach.

Patrons were told they could leave once they tested negative for the virus, the local government said in a statement after the facility was shut earlier in the day.

Everyone was tested and the park is now empty, a spokesman for Walt Disney Co. told Bloomberg News early on Tuesday.

Several city residents told Reuters they were notified on Tuesday that they or their children could not go to work or school if they had visited Disney since last Thursday and were ordered to take daily tests for the next three days.

One said she was informed that her family might have to go into central quarantine.

Marvis He was among Disney visitors caught up in the resort’s lockdown, having flown in from Shenzhen in hopes of enjoying the park’s Halloween themed fireworks.

“I feel disappointed, we waited so long in the park ... but we didn’t get to see anything and only got to get out at 10pm,” she told Reuters as she departed the resort.

“We were also cold and hungry,” her companion added.

South Korea vows tough action, moves to quell anger over Halloween crush - CNA

SEOUL: South Korea moved to calm public outrage on Tuesday (Nov 1) over a Halloween party crush that killed more than 150 people, most of them young, promising a speedy and intensive inquiry and calling for tough new safety measures to prevent similar disasters.

The death toll from the crush at a crowded Halloween street party on Saturday climbed to 156 with 151 injured, 29 of whom were in serious condition. At least 26 citizens from 14 countries were among the dead.

Tens of thousands of revellers - many in their teens and twenties and dressed in costume - had crowded into narrow streets and alleyways of the popular Itaewon district for the first virtually unrestricted Halloween festivities in three years.

The country's chief security officer, Interior Minister Lee Sang-min, apologised on Tuesday, vowing to find out the cause of the incident and prevent similar cases from recurring.

"As the minister overseeing the safety of the public, I express sincere apologies over the incident," Lee said, adding that the government had "limitless responsibility over the safety of our people" as he addressed a parliamentary session televised live.

National Police Commissioner General Yoon Hee-keun earlier on Tuesday acknowledged that crowd control at the scene was "inadequate", noting that police had received multiple reports warning of possible accidents on the night of the disaster.

"The police will speedily and rigorously conduct intensive inspections and investigation on all aspects without exception to explain the truth of this accident," Yoon told a news conference.

Seoul's City Hall has a real-time monitoring system that uses mobile phone data to predict crowd size, but it was not employed Saturday night, local media reported.

South Korea is typically strong on crowd control, with protest rallies often so heavily policed that officers can outnumber participants.

But police deployed only 137 officers to Itaewon for Halloween, while 6,500 officers were present at a protest across town attended by about 25,000 people, local reports said.
