Prince William pays heartfelt tribute to 'Grannie' - CNA

William has in recent years taken up more official duties due to the queen's age and ill health in a clear sign of his future role.

He called the queen, who died on Thursday aged 96, an "extraordinary leader", praising her "absolute" commitment to Britain, the Commonwealth and the 14 other countries where she was also head of state.

"So much will be said in the days ahead about the meaning of her historic reign," he added.

"I, however, have lost a grandmother. And while I grieve her loss, I also feel incredibly grateful."

William - Charles' elder son from his first marriage to the late Princess Diana - said he had benefited from the queen's wisdom and reassurance throughout his life.

She had offered guidance and support to his wife, Catherine, while the couple's three children - George, Charlotte and Louis - would have lifelong memories from the holidays they spent with her.

"She was by my side at my happiest moments. And she was by my side during the saddest days of my life," said William.

"I knew this day would come, but it will be some time before the reality of life without Grannie will truly feel real.

"I thank her for the kindness she showed my family and me.

"And I thank her on behalf of my generation for providing an example of service and dignity in public life that was from a different age, but always relevant to us all.

"My grandmother famously said that grief was the price we pay for love.

"All of the sadness we will feel in the coming weeks will be testament to the love we felt for our extraordinary Queen.

"I will honour her memory by supporting my father, The King, in every way I can."

King Charles vows to follow queen's example as he is proclaimed monarch - CNA

Britain's new King Charles issued a personal statement during a historic ceremony on Saturday at which he was formally proclaimed the new monarch.

Here is a text of his personal declaration:

"My Lords, Ladies, and Gentlemen.

"It is my most sorrowful duty to announce to you the death of my beloved Mother, The Queen.

"I know how deeply you, the entire Nation - and I think I may say the whole world - sympathise with me in the irreparable loss we have all suffered. It is the greatest consolation to me to know of the sympathy expressed by so many to my Sister and Brothers and that such overwhelming affection and support should be extended to our whole family in our loss.

"To all of us as a family, as to this kingdom and the wider family of nations of which it is a part, my Mother gave an example of lifelong love and of selfless service.

"My Mother’s reign was unequalled in its duration, its dedication and its devotion. Even as we grieve, we give thanks for this most faithful life.

"I am deeply aware of this great inheritance and of the duties and heavy responsibilities of Sovereignty which have now passed to me.

"In taking up these responsibilities, I shall strive to follow the inspiring example I have been set in upholding constitutional government and to seek the peace, harmony and prosperity of the peoples of these Islands and of the Commonwealth Realms and Territories throughout the world.

"In this purpose, I know that I shall be upheld by the affection and loyalty of the peoples whose Sovereign I have been called upon to be, and that in the discharge of these duties I will be guided by the counsel of their elected parliaments. In all this, I am profoundly encouraged by the constant support of my beloved wife.

"I take this opportunity to confirm my willingness and intention to continue the tradition of surrendering the hereditary revenues, including the Crown Estate, to My Government for the benefit of all, in return for the Sovereign Grant, which supports My official duties as Head of State and Head of Nation.

And in carrying out the heavy task that has been laid upon me, and to which I now dedicate what remains to me of my life, I pray for the guidance and help of Almighty God."

King Charles pledges service, expresses love for late mother, family - CNA

LONDON: Britain's King Charles III pledged on Friday (Sep 9) to follow the example of his mother Queen Elizabeth in devoting himself to duty, during a solemn address to the nation in which he also spoke of his love for her and for his wife and children.

Charles became king on Thursday after Elizabeth died aged 96 at her Scottish residence, and on Friday he flew down from Scotland to London and delivered his first speech as sovereign.

"Queen Elizabeth was a life well lived; a promise with destiny kept and she is mourned most deeply in her passing," the king said in the opening moments of his address.

"That promise of lifelong service I renew to you all today."

Charles called the late queen an inspiration and example to him, praising her profound personal commitment to serving the people of the United Kingdom and her other realms.

Charles also spoke of his profound sorrow at losing his mother, saying that he felt it "beyond measure".

The new monarch also praised his "darling wife" Camilla, now Queen Consort, and his eldest son and heir William and his daughter-in-law Kate, on whom he bestowed the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales.

Charles also expressed his love for his younger son Harry and daughter-in-law Meghan, a significant gesture towards a couple whose relationships with the rest of the royal family have been strained.

King Charles to address a nation shaken by death of queen - CNA

NATIONAL MOURNING

The government has declared a period of national mourning which would continue until the state funeral, and an online book of condolence was opened.

At the remote Balmoral Castle in Scotland where she died on Thursday and where her family gathered, people also arrived to pay their respects.

"She was amazing. She was like everyone's granny. She always managed to capture the mood with her words," said Kay McClement, 55, who came with a friend to leave flowers at the castle.

Some shed tears as they laid flowers outside the black railings of Buckingham Palace, the queen's home in central London.

"I brought my young daughter here, because even though she won't remember it, we can tell her she was here as history was happening," said railway worker Liam Fitzjohn, 27. "She's all we ever knew, we will never have a queen like that again."

The government said that it expected large crowds to mass at royal residences and warned of possible delays on some public transport.

Elizabeth was head of state of the United Kingdom and 14 other realms including Australia, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

Charles, who automatically succeeded her as king, said that her death was a moment of great sadness for himself and his family.

"I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world," the 73-year-old said in a statement.

He will meet Prime Minister Liz Truss on Friday afternoon before later addressing the country.

There were gun salutes at London's Hyde Park and at the Tower of London, and the bells at Westminster Abbey and St Paul's as well as the Sebastopol Bell at Windsor Castle, captured during the 19th-century Crimean War, tolled.

Regular business in parliament was replaced with a special session for lawmakers to pay tribute to the queen. Parliament will also convene on Saturday, something it rarely does, to approve a message of condolence to the king.

"Since last night's shocking news, we have witnessed the most heartfelt outpouring of grief at the loss of her late majesty, the queen," Truss told lawmakers, who held a minute's silence at the start of proceedings.

"Her late majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, was one of the greatest leaders the world has ever known. She was the rock on which modern Britain was built," said Truss, who Elizabeth only appointed on Tuesday in her last public duty - the 15th prime minister of her long reign.

Bereft of its symbol of continuity and resilience, Britain begins its new era with a new king and new prime minister in a grave economic crisis and following years of political division.

Long-running industrial action sparked by surging inflation was cancelled during the period of mourning.

The BBC national broadcaster said that "as a mark of respect" it had called off its remaining Proms concerts - whose patriotic, flag-waving finale was due to take place on Saturday.

The Bank of England said that it would delay its monthly meeting to set interest rates by one week due to the queen's death.

Highlights of Queen Elizabeth's 3 visits to Singapore - The Straits Times

When it was a British crown colony, Singapore was under the symbolic rule of the British monarchy until the 1960s.

Post-independence, the island state has played host to Queen Elizabeth II three times in 1972, 1989 and 2006.

During her first visit in 1972, Queen Elizabeth visited Toa Payoh, one of the first Housing and Development Board estates. She visited some residents in their new flats.

As documented on the Singapore Memory Project website, Mr Jerome Lim said his parents' Toa Payoh flat was one of those graced by the Queen and her husband, Prince Philip, for a brief visit in 1972.
