Queen Elizabeth II dies aged 96 - CNA

RECORDS

Elizabeth was the 40th monarch in a royal line that traces its origin back to Norman King William the Conqueror who claimed the English throne in 1066 after defeating Anglo-Saxon ruler Harold II at the Battle of Hastings.

Her long reign meant she repeatedly broke records for British rulers. When she surpassed the more than 63 years her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria spent on the throne, she said it was not a landmark to which she had ever aspired.

"Inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones - my own is no exception," she said.

Her marriage to Prince Philip lasted 73 years, until his death in April 2021, and they had four children, Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward.

She never gave a media interview and critics said she came across as distant and aloof.

But for the vast majority of her subjects, for whom she was the only monarch they have known, she was a figure who commanded respect and admiration. Her death marks the end of an era.

"In her public duties she was selfless and wise, with a wonderful generosity of spirit. That is how she lived – and how she led," former prime minister John Major said.

"For millions of people – across the Commonwealth and the wider world – she embodied the heart and soul of our nation, and was admired and respected around the globe."

Opinion polls have suggested that Charles does not enjoy anywhere near the same level of support and there is speculation that the loss of Elizabeth may see a rise in republican sentiment, particularly in the other realms.

"I think it will be an enormous shock to everybody, much more than they realise. I don't know if it's an exaggeration to think there will be some sort of almost national nervous breakdown," royal historian Hugo Vickers said.

He said her reign was unlikely to be rivalled.

"I think to be quite honest, if we lived 1,000 years, we would never see anything quite like it again."

At her death the queen was head of state of not only the United Kingdom but also of Australia, the Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Tuvalu, the Solomon Islands, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Antigua and Barbuda.

Royal family gathers as Queen Elizabeth's doctors sound health alarm - CNA

LONDON: Queen Elizabeth II's closest family rushed to Scotland on Thursday (Sep 8), after doctors placed the 96-year-old monarch under medical supervision, prompting concern from British political and religious leaders.

Britain's longest-reigning sovereign and the world's oldest monarch has been dogged by health problems since last October that have left her struggling to walk and stand.

"Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision," Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

"The queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral."

Her children - eldest son and heir to the throne Prince Charles, 73, Princess Anne, 72, Prince Andrew, 62, and Prince Edward, 58, were either already at or quickly headed to her Scottish home Balmoral Castle after the announcement.

They were joined by Charles's elder son Prince William plus his younger son Prince Harry, who has been on a rare visit to Britain after abandoning royal life to move to the United States.

British press later reported that Harry's wife Meghan was not travelling to Balmoral with him and would remain in London.

Such a family gathering, outside of holiday events such as Christmas or Easter or major public events, is extremely rare.

The palace statement about the queen's health is also highly unusual.

"The palace does not issue bulletins on the queen's health unless it's significant," royal commentator and author Robert Hardman told the BBC.

Last October, Elizabeth spent a night in hospital and she has been forced to cut back on her public engagements since then. On Wednesday, she cancelled a virtual meeting with senior ministers after being advised to rest by her doctors.

The previous day, she had been pictured appointing Liz Truss as the country's new prime minister at Balmoral, the 15th prime minister of her record-breaking reign.

A palace source played down speculation that the monarch had suffered a fall.

Royal family gathers by Queen Elizabeth's side in Balmoral amid concerns over health - The Straits Times

LONDON - Members of the British royal family rushed to be by the side of Queen Elizabeth after doctors said they were concerned about the health of the 96-year-old monarch on Thursday, saying she should remain under medical supervision.

The queen, Britain’s longest-reigning sovereign and the world’s oldest monarch, has been suffering from what Buckingham Palace has called “episodic mobility problems” since the end of last year.

She has been forced to cut back on her public engagements since then and on Wednesday, cancelled a planned virtual meeting with senior ministers after being advised to rest by her doctors.

“Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision,” the palace said in a statement.

“The queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral.”

A palace source said immediate members of the British royal family had been informed and played down speculation that the monarch had suffered a fall.

Elizabeth has been queen of Britain and more than a dozen other countries, including Australia and Canada, having ascended to the throne as a 25-year-old in 1952.

Earlier this year, she marked her 70th year on the throne with four days of national celebrations in June.

“I have been inspired by the kindness, joy and kinship that has been so evident in recent days, and I hope this renewed sense of togetherness will be felt for many years to come,” she said at the time.

Singapore was a British colony, and under the symbolic rule of Queen Elizabeth, until it became a founding member of Malaysia in 1963 before gaining full independence in 1965.

Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, is now with Queen Elizabeth after she was placed under medical supervision, the BBC reported.

The Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, had travelled to Balmoral Castle in Scotland after receiving news from the doctors.

Queen Elizabeth’s grandson Prince William and her sons Princes Andrew and Edward have arrived in Scotland by plane to be with the ailing monarch, television footage showed on Thursday.

Prince William, who holds the title of the Duke of Cambridge, is second in line to the throne.

Lucky Plaza Eyebrow Embroidery Allegedly Leaves Lady With Skin Infection, She Warns Others To Be Wary

For this Thai woman, however, her nightmare began when an eyebrow tattoo artist left her with four eyebrows.

Furious, she demanded the artist rectify their mistake, which they promised to do so. However, they disappeared the day after and left her with two extra eyebrows etched in permanent ink.

Ashamed of the sight, the woman reportedly refused to leave her house for a year. Fortunately, a kind tattoo artist reached out to her and fixed them for free.

Eyebrow tattooing session for woman goes wrong

According to The Sun, Nipapron Meeking, 32, went to a clinic in the Rayong province of Eastern Thailand for a cosmetic tattooing session a year ago.

“I remember planning a trip with my friends and wanting new eyebrows to look pretty,” she said. “A friend suggested a shop for me.”

She reportedly paid S$57.73 (1,500 baht) for the procedure but soon realised the artist had tattooed two extra permanent eyebrows on her forehead.

“I looked in the mirror and was speechless,” she recalled.

Horrified by the sight, Ms Nipapron confronted the artist. They then promised to fix their mistake and remove the extra tattoos.

However, the shop closed down the day after, and Ms Nipapron was unable to contact them any further.

“I had a terrible time living with four eyebrows on my forehead,” she said.  Insecure at the sight of the extra tattoos, she refused to leave her house for a year.

“I didn’t know what to do and mostly kept inside the house because it really affected my self-confidence,” she stated. “I also went to different artists but they could not fix it.”

Kind artist reaches out to offer assistance

Fortunately, a kind artist reached out to Ms Nipapron, offering to help with her troubling situation.

According to The Mirror, tattoo artist Pattawee Phumkasem, 32, wanted to provide his assistance after learning of her plight.

Though the procedure typically cost S$577.34 (15,000 baht), he was willing to render the service free of charge.

The artist has now removed Ms Nipapron’s tattooed eyebrows and will be able to restore them after three months.

“I will have to remove the old ink and wait for it to fade before outlining the new eyebrows,” he explained.

Ms Nipapron expressed her gratitude to Mr Pattawee, who helped her through such a tough period in her life.

“I had a terrible time living with four eyebrows on my forehead, but luckily I found this new tattoo artist,” she said. “With this new artist, I can finally live a normal life.”

Dream job: The Japanese man who gets paid to do nothing - CNA

"With my friends I feel I have to entertain them, but with the rental-guy (Morimoto) I don't feel the need to be chatty," she said.

Before Morimoto found his true calling, he worked at a publishing company and was often chided for "doing nothing".

"I started wondering what would happen if I provided my ability to 'do nothing' as a service to clients," he said.

The companionship business is now Morimoto's sole source of income, with which he supports his wife and child. Although he declined to disclose how much he makes, he said he sees about one or two clients a day. Before the pandemic, it was three or four a day.

As he spent a Wednesday doing nothing of note in Tokyo, Morimoto reflected on the bizarre nature of his job and appeared to question a society that values productivity and derides uselessness.

"People tend to think that my 'doing nothing' is valuable because it is useful (for others) ... But it's fine to really not do anything. People do not have to be useful in any specific way," he said.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect the cost of Shoji Morimoto's services following a correction by Reuters.

Flights cancelled, some production suspended in Japan as typhoon nears - CNA

TOKYO: Japan on Monday (Sep 5) braced for the impact of a strong approaching typhoon, with airlines cancelling flights and some companies suspending production at factories in the western part of the country.

Typhoon Hinnamnor was already pounding parts of the westernmost main island of Kyushu with heavy rain on Monday, with both rain and winds expected to worsen as the storm brushes by on Tuesday and heads towards Korea, which raised its typhoon alert level to the highest.

Parts of Kyushu were expected to be hit by about 300 millimetres of rain in the 24 hours to noon on Tuesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, also warning of strong winds and storm surges.

About 70 flights were cancelled on Monday, Japanese media said.

Toyota said it will suspend Monday night shift production starting at 9pm local time and cancel Tuesday morning production at three factories in the western prefecture of Fukuoka.

The automaker expects to resume production on the Tuesday night shift, it said on its website.

Nissan Motor and Nissan Shatai subsidiaries in Fukuoka prefecture were expected to suspend production for Monday night and Tuesday daylight shifts.

Some businesses in South Korea are also contemplating temporary suspensions of operations as typhoon Hinnamnor approaches.
