Vaccinated or not: What you can do when COVID-19 measures ease from Aug 10 - CNA

From Aug 10, you can do indoor sports and exercise at gyms and fitness studios, with masks off. A maximum of 30 vaccinated people can participate, in groups of up to five people.

You can also patronise personal services that require masks to be taken off, such as facials, saunas and make-up services.

If you are planning a wedding reception, all attendees must be vaccinated. Up to 250 people will be allowed, with at most five to a table.

Larger events can be attended by groups of up to 500 vaccinated people. These include live performances, MICE events, sports events, marriage solemnisations, cinema screenings and worship services.

When measures are eased again from Aug 19, the participation limit for such larger events will be raised to 1,000 for vaccinated people.

I’M NOT VACCINATED, WHAT CAN I DO?

Unvaccinated people can also gather in groups of up to five and receive five distinct visitors at home daily – capped at two social gatherings a day.

But you are strongly advised to remain in groups no bigger than two.

If you want to dine outside, you can only do so at hawker centres and coffee shops, in groups of up to two. This “special concession” was made as hawker centres are open-air and naturally ventilated places, said the Health Ministry.

For larger events like live performances, MICE events, sports events, marriage solemnisations, cinema screenings and religious services, up to 50 people can be in attendance if any are unvaccinated.

That participation limit will stay the same in the second round of easing of measures from Aug 19.

REGARDLESS OF VACCINATION STATUS

Some of the changes taking place will apply to both vaccinated and unvaccinated people – such as dining-in at hawker centres and coffeeshops.

In schools, indoor and outdoor mask-on activities will be allowed in groups of up to five from Tuesday, regardless of vaccination status.

In secondary schools, junior colleges, Millennia Institute and special education schools with senior or secondary sections, in-person co-curricular activities (CCAs) will resume. Activities with external vendors or at external venues can also be held for up to 50 people.

In primary schools, students can resume outdoor mask-on unstructured play with their own class.

All cohorts, including non-graduating ones, can once again attend in-person centre-based lessons.

In institutes of higher learning, groups of five can resume indoor mask-on activities and all outdoor activities. However, indoor mask-off activities can only resume if all five people are vaccinated.

In gyms and fitness studios, indoor mask-on and all outdoor activities can continue with up to 50 people in groups of five.

As for the workplace, work-from-home will no longer be the default arrangement from Aug 19. Up to half of the employees who can work from home will be allowed to return to the workplace then. Social gatherings can also resume.

Up to half of employees can return to their workplace from Aug 19 - The Straits Times

SINGAPORE - From Aug 19, up to 50 per cent of work-from-home employees will be allowed to return to their workplace as Singapore eases its Covid-19 restrictions.

On Friday (Aug 6), the Ministry of Health (MOH) said the easing of measures will take place only if the Covid-19 situation remains under control.

Working from home has been the nation's default since May 14, following a spike in Covid-19 community cases then. It was part of a slew of measures under phase two (heightened alert) aimed at bringing down the number of cases.

Prior to the tightening of workplace rules, half of employees were able to return to their workplaces from May 8.

In a press conference on Friday, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, who co-chairs the multi-ministry task force on Covid-19, said: "On Aug 10, we will start a preparatory stage. This is when we will make important adjustments to healthcare protocols, rules on social activities and travel to prepare ourselves for a Covid-19-resilient nation.

"By Aug 19, we will make further adjustments if the pandemic situation remains stable."

The preparatory stage is expected to last about a month. If 80 per cent of Singapore's population has been vaccinated by then, a further relaxation of Covid-19 safety measures can be expected, said Finance Minister Lawrence Wong, who co-chairs the task force.

China slams US offer of safe havens for Hong Kong residents - CNA

“Given the politically motivated arrests and trials, the silencing of the media, and the diminishing space for elections and democratic opposition, we will continue to take steps in support of people in Hong Kong,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said.

China imposed the national security law on Hong Kong in response to months of pro-democracy street protests in 2019.

Police have arrested at least 100 opposition politicians, activists and demonstrators, imposed severe limits on political speech, reorganised the local legislature to ensure an overwhelming pro-Beijing majority and demanded that anyone holding public office prove their loyalty to China.

Pro-democracy activists in exile pleaded with Congress last month to pass legislation to provide both temporary refuge and permanent refugee status in the US, after Hong Kong police confirmed they had a list of more than 50 people who would be arrested if they attempted to leave.

There are several thousand people from Hong Kong in the United States who would be eligible to remain and avoid being deported under what is formally known as deferred enforced departure, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Psaki didn’t rule out extending refuge beyond 18 months depending on developments in Hong Kong.

31 MPs from Umno-led BN reiterate support for Malaysia PM Muhyiddin Yassin - The Straits Times

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said on Friday (Aug 6) that 31 lawmakers from the Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN) alliance will continue backing the government until a confidence vote is held in early September.

“Our stance is that we will heed the King’s decree for the current government to continue its administration, and that its legitimacy will be tested in Parliament,” Datuk Seri Ismail told a news conference.

His list of the 31 lawmakers, however, included at least three Umno MPs who were present with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Tuesday when he announced that the party was withdrawing its support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's government, depriving it of majority backing in Parliament.

Umno MPs make up 38 of BN’s 42 lawmakers.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional pact was estimated by analysts to hold a slim majority of 113 of the 222 seats in Parliament before Umno’s move. It is now left with at most 104 MPs, far short of a simple majority.

But Mr Muhyiddin, in his audience on Wednesday with Malaysia's King, Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah, had said he still commanded the confidence of the Lower House. He said the King had agreed to his proposal to submit himself to a confidence vote when Parliament next convenes on Sept 6.

Mr Ismail, who is also an Umno vice-president, said at the press conference on Friday that the stand taken by the 31 MPs is in line with the King's wishes.

Zahid had warned earlier this week that there would be “consequences” for Mr Ismail breaking ranks with the party to back Mr Muhyiddin, after Mr Ismail appeared alongside the Premier during a live telecast on Wednesday.

“There will be consequences for his appearance (with Muhyiddin), where he is not supporting the party’s decision. I will leave it to the disciplinary board,” Zahid was quoted as saying by The Vibes news site on Wednesday.

Separately, Mr Muhyiddin told reporters in Johor on Friday that he remained confident that he still commands majority support.

“To solve this matter, we have to bring it to Parliament. I am not afraid or worried as I am confident of having the majority,” he was quoted as saying by The Star daily.

He added that any change in government could affect efforts in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Can the country face such problems if any reshuffling or changes lead to a chaotic political situation? It could affect the National Recovery Plan and any measures being taken such as the vaccination process and so on,” he said, referring to the country’s pandemic exit plan.

Opposition lawmakers from the Pakatan Harapan pact insisted on Thursday that the Prime Minister had misled the King about the level of support he enjoys and that a confidence vote should be held as soon as next Monday.

31 BN lawmakers to remain in Muhyiddin-led government until legitimacy is determined in Malaysian parliament - CNA

In the Friday press conference, Mr Ismail Sabri added that given King Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah’s wishes, the monarch would not accept any more SDs or support letters.

“So even though the UMNO president says he will send more letters to the king, I feel this is going against His Majesty’s decree,” Mr Ismail Sabri said.

He added that sending SDs which could bring down the government before the Malaysian parliament sits this September would be going against the king’s decree.

He added that the MPs’ focus was on helping the government solve current issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As responsible MPs, we feel that we are irresponsible to the people if we leave this government hurriedly, as ordered by the party,” Mr Ismail Sabri said.

“To withdraw (our support) immediately and to make the government fall, and run away from our duties entrusted by the people, this is an irresponsible act,” he added.

The deputy prime minister said they did not want to be irresponsible leaders who run away from the battlefield while people are suffering.

"So we will continue to support, based on the king's decree, (and) to stay with government until its legitimacy is decided in the parliament," he said.

Mr Saravanan, speaking at the press conference, said BN, with only 41 seats, needed to have a direction and could not withdraw from government on a whim, especially in such pressing times.

“There must be a narrative, everybody (is) blur. We withdraw, and we say no cooperation with PKR, no DAP, now no Bersatu, so where is our direction? We can’t just withdraw on a whim,” Mr Saravanan.

Bersatu, or Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, is led by Mr Muhyiddin. Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and Democratic Action Party (DAP) are component parties of the Pakatan Harapan coalition.

Olympics: Two Belarus officials stripped of Games accreditation, sent home, says source - CNA

TOKYO : Two Belarus Olympic officials involved in attempting to force sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya to return home from the Tokyo Olympics have had their Games accreditation revoked and will be leaving Tokyo, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said on Friday (Aug 6).

Artur Shumak and Yuri Moisevich, who had been named earlier in the week by the International Olympic Committee as being involved in the incident, had been taken out of the athletes' village where the teams stay at the Games, the person told Reuters.

The IOC had launched disciplinary proceedings against the two team officials two days ago.

"The two have had their accreditation removed," the person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. "They have been taken out of the Olympic village and will be going home."

Tsimanouskaya arrived in Warsaw on Wednesday evening after she refused her coaches' instruction to return to her homeland. She sought Japanese police protection and was offered a humanitarian visa by Polish authorities.

The 24-year-old athlete's case could further isolate Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who is under Western sanctions after a crackdown on opponents since last year.

The sprinter caused a furore on Sunday when she said coaches angry at her criticism over sporting issues had ordered her to pack and go to the airport before she even competed in Tokyo.
