At least 25 domestic terrorism cases opened as result of assault on US Capitol: Lawmaker - CNA

WASHINGTON: At least 25 domestic terrorism cases have been opened as a result of Wednesday's assault on the Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump, US Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy told a Democratic lawmaker on Sunday (Jan 10).

The Justice Department also said two more men were arrested in connection with the rioting on Wednesday.

Representative Jason Crow, a member of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, said McCarthy told him the Pentagon was aware of "further possible threats posed by would-be terrorists" in the days up to and including the inauguration of Democratic President-elect Joe Biden on Jan 20.

"Long guns, Molotov cocktails, explosive devices and zip ties were recovered, which suggests a greater disaster was narrowly averted," Crow, a former Army Ranger, said in a summary of his call with McCarthy.

McCarthy assured him the Pentagon was working with local and federal law enforcement to coordinate security preparations after what he described as "deficient law enforcement threat reporting" ahead of last Wednesday.

A second Republican US senator called on Sunday for Trump to resign, saying the outgoing president could face criminal liability after the storming of the Capitol by his supporters shortly after he baselessly challenged the results of the Nov. 3 election and exhorted them to "fight".

Five people died in the attack, including a police officer. A second police officer responding to the attack later died while off duty, but the cause has not been formally released.

Crow said he raised grave concerns about reports that active-duty and reserve military members were involved in the assault, and urged McCarthy to expedite investigations and courts-martial, and ensure no troops to be deployed on Jan 20 were sympathetic to domestic militants.

McCarthy agreed to take "additional measures", Crow said.

Separately, the Justice Department said in a statement that Larry Rendell Brock, of Texas, was arrested on Sunday and charged with one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on the grounds of the Capitol.

The government alleged Brock was identified as one of the individuals who was pictured holding a white flex cuff, which is used by law enforcement to restrain subjects.

Eric Gavelek Munchel, of Tennessee, was also charged with violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. Photos show a person who appears to be Munchel carrying plastic restraints, the government said.

Both men were seen in photos in the Senate chamber. It was not immediately clear if they had attorneys.

Off-duty police, firefighters under investigation in connection with US Capitol riot - CNA

WASHINGTON: As investigators seek to identify rioters who stormed the US Capitol, police departments in Virginia and Washington state have placed officers on leave as authorities examine whether they took part in unlawful acts while off-duty.

Fire departments in Florida and New York City have also said they reported to federal authorities' allegations that some of their members may have been present when the mob broke into the Capitol as Congress met to certify the results of the Nov 3 presidential election.

The police department in the small town of Rocky Mount, Virginia, said on Sunday (Jan 10) it had placed two officers on administrative leave after it learned they attended an "event" in Washington, DC on Wednesday while off-duty.

"The Town of Rocky Mount fully supports all lawful expressions of freedom of speech and assembly by its employees but does not condone the unlawful acts that occurred that day," the department said in a statement, saying it had notified federal authorities.

Five people lost their lives, including a Capitol Hill police officer, when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the formal recognition of Trump's election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

Dozens of people have been criminally charged, and the FBI has sought help from the public to identify more participants.

Seattle's police department (SPD) said it also placed two officers on administrative leave while an investigation takes place into any role they may have played in the chaos that unfolded on the other side of the country.

"If any SPD officers were directly involved in the insurrection at the US Capitol, I will immediately terminate them," the department's interim chief, Adrian Diaz, said in a statement.

The New York City Fire Department said it provided information to the FBI after receiving "anonymous allegations" that some of its members, active or retired, were present during the rioting in the nation's capital.

And in Florida the Sanford Fire Department said it placed one of its firefighters on administrative leave and was investigating after a photo and video emerged online that appeared to show him among the mob.

On Saturday a top Democratic lawmaker said the Capitol was a crime scene and urged mobile carriers and social media companies to preserve all data related to the carnage.

Trump plans defiant final week as many Democrats urge his ouster - The Straits Times

WASHINGTON (BLOOMBERG) - Banned from social media and abandoned by some staff after inciting a riot at the US Capitol, President Donald Trump and a dwindling circle of advisers plan a defiant final week in office, according to people familiar with the matter.

Mr Trump is confident Vice-President Mike Pence and members of his Cabinet won't attempt to remove him under the 25th Amendment, the people said.

Mr Pence is dismissive of the idea of trying to use that authority to drive Mr Trump from office, one person said.

The president and some allies also believe Democrats are overreaching by trying to once again impeach him over Wednesday's (Jan 6) mob at the Capitol, and think Senate conviction would be unlikely in any event.

One adviser called Democratic consideration of impeachment a political gift to Mr Trump. Mr Pence hasn't discussed the 25th Amendment beyond privately dismissing the approach as not feasible, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Mr Trump and Mr Pence haven't spoken since Wednesday, though, when the vice-president sheltered in place at the Capitol after the building was stormed by Mr Trump supporters.

Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma told the Tulsa World newspaper he'd "never seen Mr Pence as angry" as he was after being blasted by Mr Trump for not intervening in the congressional count of Electoral College votes.

Mr Trump tweeted that Mr Pence lacked "courage."

Border wall

Mr Trump plans to run out the clock on his four years in office by highlighting what he believes are his biggest accomplishments, including the barrier his administration built on at least part of the US border with Mexico. A trip to Alamo, Texas, near the border is expected on Tuesday, a White House spokesman said.

Mr Trump is also preparing at least one more round of pardons, and will try a final time to advance his administration's effort to bring Big Tech to heel, the people said, though it isn't clear what he may do.

In sum, it's a last-ditch attempt to rehabilitate Mr Trump's legacy after his supporters stormed the Capitol on Wednesday, resulting in five deaths including that of a Capitol Police officer.

Mr Trump has given no indication that he's considering resigning, as many Democrats and some Republicans have demanded. A small group of House Republicans wrote to Joe Biden on Saturday, pleading with him to persuade Speaker Nancy Pelosi to back off impeachment as an olive branch in the interest of national unity.

Mr Trump's apparent confidence belies his political and legal peril. Congressional Democrats are furious about the Capitol riot and are determined to hold the president accountable. Some Republicans have said his actions merit impeachment, including Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.

Federal prosecutors also haven't ruled out charging Mr Trump, among many others, for his role in the assault on the Capitol, while pledging that the ongoing investigation will not be politically targeted.

Mr Trump's views on the matter normally wouldn't be much of a secret. But without his Twitter account, @realDonaldTrump, and after a failed, whack-a-mole effort to post from alternative accounts, an eerie silence has descended over the White House.

Inside, Mr Trump has spoken with aides including Mr Mark Meadows, Mr Jared Kushner, Mr Dan Scavino and Ms Kayleigh McEnany, the people said.

Outside the building, there's public clamour to remove Mr Trump before his term ends. Some 57 per cent of Americans want the president removed immediately, a Reuters/Ipsos poll published Friday found, while nearly 70 per cent disapprove of Mr Trump's actions leading up to the Capitol riot.

Talk of impeachment or removal from office would make Mr Trump a martyr to his base, one person said. If the vice-president led an effort to remove him, it would only reinforce Mr Trump's declarations that a "deep state" of government bureaucrats has long been bent on opposing him, another said.

Base galvanised

Between the impeachment movement and Mr Trump's censorship by social media, the president and his advisers believe his supporters are galvanised. Mr Trump feels impeachment could have a boomerang effect on Democrats, one person said, while another dismissed it as the latest Democratic witch hunt.

Mr Trump and his team will respond to the Twitter ban during his final week in office by leaning into his fight against what he's called censorship of Republicans by large technology companies.

The president has long demanded that Congress revoke Section 230, a liability waiver social media companies depend upon to allow relatively unfettered speech on their platforms. He'll likely amplify that call, though Mr Biden's inauguration on Jan 20 and Democrats' takeover of the Senate is expected to snuff out prospects for any change to the law for now.

Mr Trump has prepared several executive orders related to Big Tech companies but it's not clear if any will be issued, one person said.

It isn't clear if Mr Trump's team is yet preparing for a Senate impeachment trial. White House counsel Pat Cipollone won't be involved, after leading Mr Trump's defence during his first impeachment a year ago, in part because his job ends with Mr Biden's inauguration, one person familiar with the matter said.

Mr Trump's personal lawyer, Mr Rudy Giuliani didn't respond to messages seeking comment on Saturday. Neither did Mr Alan Dershowitz, professor emeritus at Harvard Law School, or Mr Jay Sekulow, an outside attorney, who both represented Trump at his first impeachment trial.

The Senate won't reconvene until Jan 19 and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said Friday in a memo to colleagues that a trial can't begin before then unless all 100 senators consent to it - an exceedingly unlikely development, as Mr Trump retains allies among Republicans in the chamber.

No reports of Singaporeans on Sriwijaya Air flight: MFA - CNA

SINGAPORE: There are no reports of Singaporeans on board the downed Sriwijaya Air flight SJ 182 said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on Sunday (Jan 10).

The plane had gone missing from radar screens shortly after takeoff a day earlier, carrying 62 passengers including 10 children.

“The Singapore Government is saddened by the news of the crash of Sriwijaya Air flight SJ 182 on Jan 9, 2021 and we convey our deepest condolences to the government of Indonesia and the families that are left behind,” MFA said in a statement.

The aircraft, bound for Pontianak in West Kalimantan, went missing in the Java Sea just minutes after it took off from Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 2.36pm local time (3.36pm Singapore time) on Saturday.

Black boxes location for downed Indonesian Sriwijaya Air plane found - CNA

JAKARTA: Indonesia's top military official said on Sunday (Jan 10) that search and rescue personnel have detected emergency signals from the black boxes of the Sriwijaya Air jet that went missing on the day before.

"We are confident that they will be retrieved soon," Indonesian military chief General Hadi Tjahjanto told a press conference at the Jakarta International Container Terminal, where rescue efforts are being coordinated.

Tjahjanto did not specify the exact timeframe.

He added that the aircraft's "precise location" has also been determined - at a depth of 23m - not far from where it disappeared from radar screens.

“At this very moment all military personnel (involved) are approaching the location,” he said.

In a statement later in the evening, Mr Rasman MS, the search coordinator of Basarnas, the national search and rescue agency said: "There is a possibility that we will retrieve the black boxes tonight."

He warned that the success of the retrieval will hinge upon the weather conditions at sea, saying that while it will be "challenging to do it at night", the agency already has ships at the site.

"We will retrieve them as quickly as possible because of how vital they are to the investigation."

Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee said it has retrieved radar data, and the recordings and transcripts between the pilot of SJ 182 and the air traffic controller.

"We have also interviewed the air traffic controller in charge of managing the plane's flight path," said Mr Nurchayo Utomo, the aviation sub committee head of Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT).

Mr Utomo added that several debris retrieved from the sea have been identified as plane instruments, including the Ground Proximity Warning System and part of a plane's emergency door.

The KNKT has also received offers from its counterpart in Singapore, the Transportation Safety Investigation Bureau, to assist in finding the black boxes and have coordinated with the National Transportation Safety Board of the United States to help with the investigation.

"The KNKT is still asking permission from the government to bring these international investigators here, since there is a ban on foreigners coming to Indonesia until Jan 14," said Mr Utomo.

The aircraft, bound for Pontianak in West Kalimantan, went missing in the Java Sea, just minutes after taking off from Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 2.36pm local time (3.36pm Singapore time) on Saturday.

There were 62 people on board, including 12 crew members and 10 children. The flight was scheduled to land in Pontianak at about 4.15pm.

"The control tower's last contact with the plane was at 2.40pm, before the contact was lost," a spokesman from the Indonesian transport ministry said on Saturday.

“We will assist Basarnas in retrieving wreckage and debris from SJ 182," Tjahjanto added. "We have been able to retrieve small pieces but for major pieces, we will deploy ships equipped with cranes to lift them."

Authorities on Sunday said they found debris of what they suspect to belong to the plane, including parts of the plane's registration number and clothing items.

Rescue personnel also retrieved five bags of human body parts, which have been sent for identification.

This is the first major air crash in Indonesia since 189 passengers and crew members were killed in 2018 when a Lion Air Boeing 737 Max also plunged into the Java Sea soon after takeoff from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
