BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Mainland China saw a drop in its daily tally of new coronavirus cases, reversing four straight days of gains, as the capital Beijing ramped up measures to contain the number of infections arriving from abroad.

China had 39 new confirmed cases on Sunday, the National Health Commission said, down from 46 a day earlier. All of them involved travellers arriving from abroad, many of whom are Chinese students returning home.

The city of Beijing expanded measures to contain imported infections, diverting all international flights arriving from Monday to other airports in other cities, including Shanghai and as far west as Xian, where passengers will undergo virus screening.

Beijing reported 10 new imported cases, the National Health Commission said on Monday, down from 13 a day earlier. Infections from abroad in the city hit an all-time high of 21 on March 18.

Shanghai and Guangzhou have also said all arriving international passengers will undergo tests to screen for the coronavirus, expanding a programme that previously only applied to those coming from heavily-affected countries.

Shanghai reported 10 new cases on Sunday, down from a record 14 a day earlier.

Guangdong province saw seven new imported infections, Fujian had four and Jiangsu had two. Hebei, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Shandong and Sichuan each saw just one case, bringing the total imported cases in China to 314 so far.

Mainland China saw no new locally transmitted infections.

In Wuhan, capital of central Hubei province, authorities have eased tough lockdown measures as the epicentre of the outbreak in China saw no new infection for the fifth day.

Downtown Wuhan remains the only high-risk area in the province, with other cities and counties in Hubei are now classifed as low-risk.

Wuhan went into a virtual lockdown on Jan. 23 to contain the spread of the virus to the rest of China.

According to authorities on Sunday, people can enter the city if they are certified healthy and have no fever.

Hubei residents who are in Wuhan can apply to leave the city, but they have to go through a test for the virus and if are certified healthy.

There is still no indication that Wuhan residents can leave the city for non-essential reasons.

As of Sunday, the total accumulated number of confirmed cases in mainland China stood at 81,093.

The death toll from the outbreak in mainland China reached 3,270, up by nine from the previous day.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has made the decision to self-quarantine in her home after having contact with a doctor who subsequently tested positive for the coronavirus.

Merkel was informed after a press conference Sunday that a doctor who administered a pneumococcal vaccine to her on Friday afternoon tested positive for the virus, according to German government spokesman Steffen Seibert. 

Merkel decided to immediately quarantine herself in her home, Seibert said.  She will be tested regularly over the coming days and will continue to conduct her duties as chancellor from home. 

Merkel's decision to self-quarantine comes as the coronavirus pandemic continues to escalate across Europe, including in Germany. 

Germany, the European Union's largest economy, has banned meetings of more than two people in public for the next two weeks to contain the spreading virus. Exceptions will be made for people who live together and for work-related gatherings. 

"The great aim is to gain time in the fight against the virus," Merkel said during a press briefing Sunday. 

Germany is one of the hardest-hit countries in the world, with more than 23,000 people who have tested positive, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. At least 92 people have died from the virus in the country.

Europe is in a state of lockdown as the epicenter of the global pandemic has shifted from China to countries like Italy, Spain, Germany and France. These countries, the largest economies in the EU, have closed all nonessential shops, bringing economic life on the continent to a standstill. 

Germany has effectively closed its borders temporarily with France, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark and Luxembourg to stop the virus from spreading. 

As the pandemic spreads, there is growing concern that world leaders could contract the virus, potentially impacting critical functions of government.  

U.S. President Donald Trump tested negative for the virus after contact with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's press secretary, who tested positive. Bolsonaro tested negative. Vice President Mike Pence also tested negative after a member of his office tested positive. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's wife tested positive for the virus.

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain’s death toll from the coronavirus epidemic soared to 1,720 on Sunday from 1,326 the day before, according to multiple media outlets citing the latest health data.

The number of registered cases in the country rose to 28,572 on Sunday from 24,926 in the previous tally announced on Saturday, the reports added.

Coronavirus updates: Global death toll tops 13,000 - CBS News

The number of deaths caused by the coronavirus worldwide reached at least 13,049, including 340 in the U.S. and 4,825 in Italy, where the devastating virus has brought the country to its knees.

Italy hit a grim milestone Saturday by recording record-breaking death tolls two days in a row. The country announced its biggest day-to-day increase of infections, which rose to 53,000 people, with nearly 800 new deaths. As bodies pile up in Italian hospitals, morgues and churches, and as medical workers plead for more help, there is no sign yet that Italy is taming its arc of its contagion.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said 114 people had died in the state, and said hospital capacity needs to double to meet the anticipated need for beds to treat patients.

In the U.S., the Senate adjourned without an agreement on a coronavirus relief package, planning to resume work Sunday. The finalized measure is expected to cost between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion, according to congressional sources, and include direct payments to most U.S. taxpayers.

There are over 26,000 confirmed cases in the U.S., and nearly 312,000 worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University.
