Political Islam: Syariah-inspired laws in some parts of Malaysia, Indonesia worry non-Muslims - CNA

KUALA LUMPUR/PADANG: Ms Hasyimah Ayuni has only recently taken an interest in Islam outside the mosque.

The youngest of seven siblings, Ms Hasyimah, who is pursuing a masters degree in environmental health at a university in Malaysia’s Klang Valley, now believes that it is her duty to live in accordance with Islamic principles.

This came about following a court case that challenged the validity of several Syariah laws in the eastern state of Kelantan in February.

Ms Hasyimah told CNA that as Malaysia has a Muslim majority, it was logical that laws for Muslims be given priority over other laws.

She also wants Malaysia to use Syariah laws instead of the common law system being used today.

“As a Muslim, you have laws in your religion that God told you to follow but your country asks you to follow (their) laws, some which are based on Western sources (and) differ from your religion. Wouldn’t you feel angry and sad?” she said, adding that Islam covers all aspects of life.

She believes Syariah laws are the best set of laws that would guarantee the wellbeing of both Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

“This is because the laws are based on legal sources for Muslims such as the Quran (Islam’s holy book),” she said.

According to a study by the Pew Research Center in 2022, most Muslims in both Malaysia and neighbouring Indonesia favoured making Syariah the official law of the land.

The results of the study, which were released in September last year, said that 86 per cent of Malaysian Muslims supported using Syariah as the official law of the land, while 64 per cent of Indonesian Muslims supported the idea.

But communities in the two countries are debating whether these regulations should apply to all, or if Islam’s influence could impact diversity and social freedoms.

According to the Pew Research Center, Syariah, or Islamic law, offers moral and legal guidance for nearly all aspects of life – from marriage and divorce, to inheritance and contracts, to criminal punishments.

About 63.5 per cent of Malaysians are Muslims, according to official statistics.

Political analyst Azmi Hassan of the Nusantara Strategic Academy said most Muslims in Malaysia would say that Syariah law should be used to govern them, and this was regardless of where they come from or their status.

“The belief is there in general. Syariah laws are considered to be the ultimate in governance and Muslims believe them to be the best laws compared to whatever other laws that are being practised,” he said.

PETALING JAYA - The assassination target of an Israeli man arrested by Malaysian police on March 27 had been nabbed for murder nearly two decades ago.

According to news portal Times of Israel, Eran Haya came to Malaysia following grenade attacks on the house of the recently detained Israeli man, identified as Shalom Avitan, in Tel Aviv earlier in March.

According to another Israeli news portal, Haaretz, Haya was arrested for a murder in Mexico in 2004 when he was 23.

Haya was suspected of killing a policeman-turned-gangland assassin in Cancun, Mexico, in December 2004, reported The Jerusalem Post.

Haya, who was an American citizen, had been under police surveillance until he went back to Israel two years later.

According to police sources, Haya, who grew up in the United States, returned to Israel at age 16 with his father, at which point he became active in the Israeli criminal underworld.

He was also a suspect in a number of other mob hits and murder attempts, although police sources say they have had trouble finding evidence against him.

He was believed to have ties to the Parinyan and Mulner crime syndicates.

One of these families was said to be in a violent feud with the Musli brothers crime family.

Avitan was caught at a five-star hotel in Kuala Lumpur on March 27. He allegedly came to Malaysia using a French passport but handed over an Israeli passport following police interrogation.

He told police that he came to Malaysia to assassinate a fellow Israeli over a family dispute.

However, police have not ruled out the possibility that Avitan is a foreign intelligence agent and have heightened security at places of interest and for the Malaysian King, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other dignitaries. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Salvage crews to lift first piece of collapsed Baltimore bridge - CNA

"This is a remarkably complex operation," Moore said of the effort to clear bridge debris and open the Port of Baltimore to shipping traffic.

The bodies of two workers who were repairing the bridge deck at the time of the disaster have been recovered, but Moore said efforts to recover four others presumed dead remain suspended because conditions are too dangerous for divers to work amid too much debris.

Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath told reporters that teams from the Coast Guard, the US Navy's salvage arm and the US Army Corps of Engineers said the debris from the Patapsco River's deep-draft shipping channel would have to be removed before the Dali could be moved.

Saturday's operation involves cutting a piece just north of that channel and lifting it with a 160-ton marine crane onto a barge. A larger, 1,000-ton crane also is at the bridge site.

The piece will be brought to Tradepoint Atlantic, the site of the former Bethlehem Steel Mill which is being developed into a distribution center for companies including Amazon.com, Home Depot and Volkswagen. The facility's port, which sits on the Chesapeake Bay side of the collapsed bridge, is fully operational.

Five days after the tragedy, the jobs of some 15,000 people whose work revolves around daily port operation are on hold. While logistics experts say that other East Coast ports should be able to handle container traffic, Baltimore is the largest US port for "roll-on, roll-off" vehicle imports and exports of farm and construction equipment.

Japan, China experts discuss Fukushima water release - CNA

TOKYO: Japanese and Chinese experts held talks on treated wastewater from the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, Japan's foreign ministry said late Saturday (Mar 30), the first such talks to be announced since Tokyo began releasing the water into the ocean last year.

Japan and China have been at loggerheads over the discharge of the wastewater, which was used to cool the reactors after the 2011 meltdown.

Japan insists it has been safely treated, but China has criticised the release and banned Japanese seafood imports.

"A dialogue between Japanese and Chinese experts on the discharge of ... treated water into the ocean (by the Fukushima plant) was held in Dalian, China on Mar 30 to exchange views on technical matters," Tokyo's foreign ministry said in a statement.

The announcement comes after Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in November and said science-based discussions would take place at the expert level.

Japan began gradually discharging some of the 1.34 million tonnes of wastewater that have accumulated since the disaster into the Pacific in August, sparking a diplomatic row with China and Russia, both of which banned seafood imports.

China has accused Tokyo of treating the sea as a "sewer", but Japan insists the discharge is safe, a view backed by the UN atomic agency.

Kishida called on China at the November Asia-Pacific summit in San Francisco to make an "objective judgment" on the safety of Japan's seafood, which is a major industry in the country.

Japan began releasing the treated wastewater because the nuclear facility was running out of space to build more water tanks, and it needed to make room for the much more hazardous task of removing radioactive fuel and rubble from the three stricken reactors.

Baltimore bridge collapse: Crew in for long haul on S'pore-flagged Dali as cleanup begins - The Straits Times

BALTIMORE – A heavy chunk of a bridge in Baltimore that rests on a ship that knocked down the bridge will have to be hacked into pieces and hauled away by cranes before the vessel can be towed away.

Until then, the 22 all-Indian crew members of the Dali container ship will likely have to stay on board.

In the early hours of March 26, the Singapore-flagged ship “lost propulsion” and rammed into a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse into the Patapsco River.

“The crew will probably move with the ship, so long as nothing goes wrong in the process of removing debris,” Petty Officer Carmen Caver of the United States Coast Guard told The Straits Times on March 29.

“They will most likely go shoreside when the boat itself does,” she said, speaking from the Unified Command and Joint Information Centre set up to coordinate responses and disseminate information about the bridge.

Ms Caver, however, added that she could not specify the timeframe in which the ship will be moved.

The 300m-long ship, about the length of three football fields, was headed for a four-week voyage to Sri Lanka.

Among the 4,700 containers on board are 56 that carry 764 tonnes of hazardous materials, like corrosive and flammable liquids and lithium-ion batteries.

Describing the complex operations to clear the wreckage, Maryland Governor Wes Moore said giant floating crane Chesapeake 1000 had reached the scene, but it could lift only up to 1,000 tonnes of debris.

“One of the challenges is that the Key Bridge, which sits on top of the vessel right now, that portion weighs somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000 tonnes,” he added at a press conference on March 29.

The US Army Corps of Engineers, which is leading the cleanup, said the top priority is to allow traffic to begin flowing again by clearing the shipping channel of the chunks of the bridge.

Next, the pieces that fell on the ship will be cut into pieces to be lifted before the vessel is towed away. Lastly, concrete and steel from the bridge that litter the river bed will be dredged up.

While that happens, the crew is required to stay on board and help with the investigations.

Investigators from Singapore’s Transport Safety Investigation Bureau and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore have travelled to Baltimore to join the efforts led by the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

The ship’s captain, his mate and chief engineer have spoken to investigators, NTSB chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said.

President Joe Biden is expected to visit the site of the accident – which has crippled the Baltimore port – next week.

Ms Caver said: “The crew show us around, they make sure that we are completely in the know with everything that’s going on with the boat. They are making sure it stays okay and in good standing where it’s at.

“Other than that, they’re just doing their day-to-day normal routines, relaxing and taking some time off while the investigation is ongoing.”

India’s Foreign Ministry said on March 28 that the crew are “in good shape”. A helpline set up by the Indian embassy in Washington, DC to provide consular service has not been tapped, ST has learnt.

“For the foreseeable future, there is absolutely nothing that they are in need of,” Ms Caver said, adding that she could not speak about their morale.

“I couldn’t speculate on exactly how they’re doing, but I do know if they need anything or request anything, we immediately try to get it for them, whether it be a chaplain to talk to, or just general day-to-day things.

“They have cell service, they’re able to talk to other people outside the boat. They’re close enough to land where they have all the services they need.”

Many volunteers from the local community have offered to render help if extra provisions or supplies are needed, she noted.

Mr Darren Wilson, spokesman for Synergy Marine, which manages the Dali, said: “The crew is being well looked after.”

“They’re still on board the ship because they still have jobs and duties onboard,” he added, noting that there is close contact between the authorities and the crew.

“They are a top priority. Synergy has been in touch with their families and keeps them updated on what’s going on.”

Are Muslim youths in Malaysia and Indonesia becoming more conservative? | Video - CNA

Are Muslim youths in Malaysia and Indonesia getting more conservative? “I’m not interested in concerts. I'm more interested in religious lectures and celebrations of the Prophet's birthday," one Malay Muslim youth told CNA. But while the religious conservatism wave is on the rise in Malaysia, it's ebbing in neighbouring Indonesia.

'Daunting task': Cranes arrive to clear Baltimore bridge debris - CNA

BALTIMORE: Three heavy lift floating cranes arrived in Baltimore harbour on Friday (Mar 29) to begin what Maryland's governor described as a "remarkably complex operation" to clear crumpled girders from a collapsed bridge taken down by an errant container ship.

"To see it up close, you realise just how daunting a task this is," Maryland Governor Wes Moore told a news conference after touring the disaster scene in a boat.

Migrant groups meantime honoured the six Latino construction workers who lost their lives when the Dali container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge long before dawn Tuesday, toppling it with stunning speed. The six were part of a pothole repair team.

"I am here to say that we immigrants are essential," said Erika Aleman, a construction worker from Honduras who lives in Baltimore.

Vessel traffic through the busy Port of Baltimore has been suspended indefinitely, causing disruptions to trade spanning the globe, and Moore warned that recovery would be lengthy.

"We cannot rebuild the bridge until we have cleared the wreckage," Moore said. "This is going to be a long road."

The complexity of the recovery dismayed those involved.

"We have to figure out the right plan to be able to break that bridge up into the right-sized pieces that we can lift," US Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said.

Twisted bridge trusses weighing thousands of tons still entrap the damaged container ship.

The Chesapeake, a 1,000-ton lift capacity derrick barge, and two smaller crane barges arrived in Baltimore harbor, the Navy said, and a fourth crane barge will arrive next week.

The work of clearing tons of steel debris from the deep waters of the Patapsco River is made more delicate by the fact that the bodies of four workers have yet to be recovered.

The four missing workers are believed to have been killed when the Singapore-flagged, 300m Dali lost power and careened into a bridge support column.

Thai PM says legalising casinos good for revenue and jobs, eyes entertainment project - CNA

BANGKOK: Thailand's government is considering drafting a casino bill and if passed by parliament, it would generate more jobs and state revenue and allow for the creation of a mega entertainment project, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Friday (Mar 29).

Casinos are illegal in Thailand and the only gambling allowed is on state-controlled horse races and the lottery, though illicit gambling is commonplace, with underground casinos and soccer betting rife.

Southeast Asia's second-largest economy is considering allowing casinos as another means of drawing in investment and tourism, according to a study in parliament that was passed late on Thursday.

Many in the industry believe a legal casino market in Thailand would be a huge success in drawing overseas visitors, providing strong competition for the world's biggest gambling hub Macau, the only place in China where citizens can legally gamble in casinos.

"We can regulate the grey economy and collect taxes ... We do not want to promote gambling, but would rather supervise it and use the investment to create jobs," Srettha said in a post on X.

Legalisation of gambling has been discussed in the past but no government has gone ahead due to public opposition.

Underground casinos do exist in Thailand but large numbers of its people travel to neighbouring Cambodia and beyond to visit huge casino complexes, revenue that gambling advocates say could be kept in-country.

The proposed entertainment complex, the location of which Srettha did no disclose, would have a concert hall and sports venue, among other things, plus a gambling floor, although that would account for only 3 per cent to 10 per cent of the total area, he said on X.

Cabinet would have to submit a draft law to parliament for consideration, he added.

Political Islam: Why the religious conservatism wave is rising in Malaysia but ebbing in Indonesia - CNA

In neighbouring Indonesia, concerns over the rise of political Islam and religious conservatism, especially in the lead-up to its latest election last month, appear to have cooled.

All three pairs of presidential and vice-presidential candidates did not succumb to the use of identity politics to garner votes, observers noted.

The three pairs are: Former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan who teamed up with chairman of the Islamic National Awakening Party (PKB) Muhaimin Iskandar; current Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto and Solo mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka; as well as former Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo who ran with former member of PKB Mahfud MD.

The winning duo of Mr Prabowo and Mr Gibran have never been members of Islamic parties, unlike the other two pairs of candidates.

There was worry that the election would be marred by religious conservatism especially since identity politics dominated the 2019 presidential and legislative elections and Jakarta’s 2017 gubernatorial elections.

Mr Ujang Komarudin, a political Islam expert from Jakarta’s Al Azhar University, believes some political groups want to enforce Islamic ideologies but struggle to win in elections because Indonesian society is heterogeneous.

"Objectively speaking, there are indeed people or groups that fight for an Islamic ideology or political Islam.

"But if we look at the Islamic community, Islam itself here is heterogeneous. It is not homogeneous,” said Mr Ujang.

And although about 87 per cent of Indonesia’s over 270 million people are Muslims, many are not pious, Mr Ujang added.

Many Indonesians practise a moderate form of Islam or are Muslims according to their identity cards but do not really practise the religion.

“This impacts the behaviour of the voters and their choice (during elections),” said Mr Ujang.

Beyond that, analysts told CNA that the differing ideologies of various Islamic political groups and their inability to garner mainstream support as well as the country’s foundational philosophical theory of Pancasila appear to counter the threat of rising conservatism in Indonesia.

DIFFERING IDEOLOGIES GOVERNING ISLAMIST POLITICAL PARTIES

Mr Ujang believes that the Islamist political parties in Indonesia are not united and have differing ideologies. This is unlike in Malaysia, with its dominant Islamist party, the Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS).

“For example, PKB and the National Mandate Party (PAN), do they function based on their ideologies? I think not,” said Mr Ujang.

“They function based on interests, whether when forming a coalition or campaigning. They don’t highlight Islamic values but general or universal values if they talk about Islam.”

There are currently nine political parties in the Indonesian parliament.

Five of them are nationalist parties, and four of them have Islamic ideologies, namely PKB, PAN, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and the United Development Party (PPP).

Only PKB showed a significant increase in votes in last month's legislative elections, making it the fourth-largest party in the upcoming 2024-2029 parliament, whose members will be inaugurated in October.

It was the fifth-largest party in parliament based on the results of the 2019 elections - behind the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Golkar, Gerindra and National Democratic Party (Nasdem).

“Regarding the legislative election results, thank God. We at PKB are grateful.

“Because we are led by Mr Muhaimin, who is Mr Anies's vice-presidential candidate, we received a significant coattail effect,” said Mr Zainul Munasichin, secretary of PKB’s election-winning unit.

Coattail effect is the tendency for a political party figure to attract votes for other candidates from the same party.

In the recent election, Mr Anies and Mr Muhaimin were backed by the coalition of PKB, PKS and nationalist party Nasdem.

Before the coalition was formed, some analysts opined that PKB and PKS would not be able to work together because they believed in a different form of Islam. But PKB’s Mr Zainul told CNA that his party’s alliance with PKS was “purely tactical”.

Meanwhile, PAN - which backed Mr Prabowo and Mr Gibran - was founded by people who were members of Indonesia’s second-biggest Islamic organisation, Muhammadiyah.

PAN’s secretary general Eddy Soeparno said it performed slightly better in February’s election compared to five years ago because of the perception then that it was right-wing due to its founder’s participation in events attended by hardline Islamic groups.

The remaining Islamist party in parliament - the PPP - is the oldest and has existed for 51 years.

It was one of the only three political parties during the regime of Suharto, along with nationalist party Golkar and PDI, now named PDI-P.

But in recent years, it has lost ground.

Mr Muhammad Romahurmuziy, chairman of PPP’s advisory council, attributed this to many factors.

One was because it does not have a strong leading figure and political machinery.

“We would have to undertake a major reorientation in the next party congress,” Mr Romahurmuziy told CNA, adding that it is due in December next year but could be brought forward due to the latest election results.

According to the official results released by the Indonesia's General Elections Commission, PPP did not meet the minimum threshold of 4 per cent to enter the House of Representatives. This is the first time since its establishment in 1973 that the party will not be represented in parliament, although PPP will challenge the election results at the Constitutional Court.

Mr Adi Prayitno, a political Islam expert from Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah, surmised that parties operate based on interests rather than ideologies because Indonesia has a multi-party presidential system.

“There is a tendency that everyone is just chasing electoral votes,” said Mr Adi.

“In Indonesia, everything is being measured by political interests and not ideology.”

PANCASILA A WAY TO REIN IN IDENTITY POLITICS

In line with this, Mr Ujang from Al Azhar University noted that Islamic conservatism is not a selling point to most Indonesians.

“I don’t think conservatism is a threat in Indonesia because the democracy in Indonesia is built on Pancasila,” said Mr Ujang.

Pancasila is Indonesia’s ideology, which consists of five principles: Belief in one and only God, justice and civilised humanity, unity of the country, democracy guided by the inner wisdom among representatives, and social justice for all Indonesians.

“And Pancasila is the home of all religions in Indonesia, creating harmony,” Mr Ujang said.

Mr Ahmad Khoirul Umam, a political lecturer from Islamic university Paramadina in Jakarta, concurred.

“This is what makes the character of Islam in Indonesia very different from others in the region,” he said.

Mr Umam said Pancasila has become an identity of Indonesia, with its history dating back to the country’s first president, Sukarno.

Dean of Islam Nusantara faculty at Nahdlatul Ulama Indonesia University Ahmad Suaedy told CNA that Pancasila is the reference point for every political group because it encompasses various ideologies.

“So, in Indonesia, there are many religious elements which are used by the state. But they are not part of the political symbol because of Pancasila,” said Mr Ahmad.

In a country with about 1,300 different ethnic groups, the analysts believe that Pancasila has been a crucial element in keeping the country united.

“We are grateful Indonesia has Pancasila, which unites different religious communities. So there is no reason for Islam to be dominant and a threat,” said Mr Ujang.

2 men die of suspected food poisoning in Taipei after eating char kway teow - The Straits Times

All outlets of restaurant chain Polam Kopitiam in Taipei have been ordered to close. PHOTO: POLAM KOPITIAM

Two men died of suspected food poisoning after reportedly dining at a Malaysian vegetarian restaurant in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.

All outlets of restaurant chain Polam Kopitiam were ordered to close during investigations into the deaths and hospitalisation of customers who had eaten at one of the outlets in the city, local media reported Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an as saying on March 27.

According to the Taipei Department of Health, eight people who dined at the restaurant in the Far Eastern Department Store in Xinyi District on March 19, 21 and 22 later fell sick with symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea, and sought medical help.

Among them, a 39-year-old man who ate at the restaurant on March 22 died two days later, while a 66-year-old man who ate there on March 19 died on March 27.

At least one of the eight is reported to be in the intensive care unit.

They are believed to have eaten char kway teow – a stir-fried noodle dish – among other dishes at the restaurant.

Local media reported that Taipei health officials were alerted on March 24 that it could be a case of food poisoning after one of the diners who fell ill was treated at a hospital.

Food samples were then collected from the restaurant for testing, and it was ordered to improve operations.

On March 26, the Taipei City government ordered the closure of the restaurant’s Xinyi District branch, and has since extended the order to the chain’s other outlets – which are all in the city.

According to Polam Kopitiam’s website, the Xinyi outlet’s lease is to expire on March 31, while preparations are under way for the opening of a new branch in Taipei’s East District. The restaurant chain also has outlets in the city’s Raohe Night Market and at Taipei Main Station.

Mr Chiang said that the Taipei health authorities carried out food sample testing at the restaurant, but have not found any bacteria commonly associated with food poisoning.

Meanwhile, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) director-general Wu Shou-mei said that Taipei city and TFDA officials had taken samples of food products – including cabbage, rice noodles and soya sauce – that usually have high risk of contamination on March 26, with the results expected in two weeks.

Although the restaurant passed a food safety inspection in 2022, Taipei health inspectors who visited the eatery after the suspected poisonings found several problems such as cockroach droppings on the premises, knives stored on the counter next to the sink, and a failure to provide employee health records, local media reported Ms Wu as saying.

The Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office also said it seized surveillance footage and collected evidence at the restaurant’s premises on March 27 together with the police and the health authorities, and has assigned a special prosecutor to oversee the investigation, according to local media.

As its 'last samurai' chief battles poor health, frontmen from factions in Malaysia's Islamist party PAS are touted as successor - CNA

KUALA TERENGGANU: Reports of Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) president Abdul Hadi Awang’s continuing ill health have triggered speculation over a potential successor for the top position of Malaysia’s Islamist party.

Two political rising stars from different factions of the party have emerged as main contenders to succeed the 76-year-old: one a religious legacy candidate, the other a progressive professional.

The differences between Mr Abdul Hadi's son Dr Muhammad Khalil, and Dr Ahmad Samsuri, as well as their contrasting ideologies representative of the respective camps, have caught the attention of observers and raised questions over the future direction of the party, and whether any potential infighting could disrupt a smooth transition.

Political analysts CNA spoke to believe that it could soon be time for PAS to consider succession. And as the party enjoys its strongest position yet, following a stellar performance in 2023 state elections and looks to attract new voter demographics, the stakes are high for whoever might step up to take the helm.

Associate Professor Yusri Ibrahim, chief researcher at think-tank Ilham Centre told CNA: “In the context of PAS with the concerns over health of the party president, it is perhaps time for the party to commence a leadership transition.

“The snag is that in PAS currently it is unclear who has the most calibre to take over the leadership mantle,” he added.

A CRITICAL POINT FOR SUCCESSION PLANNING

PAS is at a crucial juncture in its history.

The party is arguably at the strongest point since it was founded in the 1950s. It currently holds the most seats in the federal legislature after a strong showing in the 2022 general election, more than Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) as well as the country's historically dominant party the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO).

However, PAS and its ally party Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition did not garner enough seats and support to form the government and are now in the opposition.

Researchers have predicted that PAS’ influence is expected to grow with the party strengthening its base in areas where Malay Muslims are the majority, while making inroads in urban areas, as seen during the 2023 state elections when it won 105 out of 127 seats it contested.

Speculation over who might lead the party through this era of potential growth has been further fuelled by recent reports of the current chief’s continuing ill health.

Two years ago, Mr Abdul Hadi was hospitalised at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur for shortness of breath.

More recently in July 2023, he was again warded in his home state Terengganu for an unspecified illness. At the time, his condition was of sufficient concern that Dr Muhammad Khalil released a statement asking for well-wishers to make prayers for his father's health.

Mr Hadi Awang was again hospitalised on New Year's Day for an unspecified illness at the National Heart Institute. He was reportedly discharged in February.

When the newly installed Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar delivered his maiden speech in the lower house at the end of February, the PAS president’s seat at the front of the opposition bench was conspicuously empty.

During the PN's elected lawmakers convention in Kuala Lumpur in early March, the current PAS chief was spotted in a wheelchair. Local media reported that the Marang Member of Parliament (MP) needed help to stand for certain segments of the programme, including a photo shoot.

POSSIBLE SUCCESSOR FROM PROFESSIONAL OR ULAMA FACTION?

Mr Abdul Hadi's eldest son, Dr Muhammad Khalil, is a member of the party’s central committee, a former youth chief, and a potential successor to his father's position.

Analysts noted that there is interest surrounding the 47-year-old given that he has been put forth by the party recently for important roles.

Malaysia Edition: Anwar pays the price for poaching rivals | Religion and red tape stymie entertainment tourism - The Straits Times

Asian Insider: Malaysia Edition helps you connect the dots on the biggest stories playing out in Malaysia every week. Sign up here to get the newsletter in your inbox.

In a bid to shore up support, Malaysia’s government this week watered down a controversial constitutional amendment that critics - including ruling lawmakers - had earlier warned would render thousands of abandoned children stateless.

Just as it works to resolve this delicate issue, the temperature over socks printed with the word “Allah” has only risen.

Despite a slew of enforcement actions taken by authorities, including bringing legal charges against directors of both the convenience store chain and the socks supplier, as well as raids on several related shops (which found no offending socks), tensions have continued to simmer.

How these issues play out politically could be tested soon enough with the opposition Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s attempt to amend its constitution in hopes of triggering a by-election for the seats of defectors who pledged support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

But whether these votes happen or not, analysts believe that the move to welcome these turncoats will now backfire on the premier and his government.

Ostrich captured after escaping Korean zoo, dodging traffic for an hour - CNA

SEOUL: An ostrich that escaped from a zoo in the South Korean town of Seongnam has been captured, local authorities said on Tuesday (Mar 26), after it spent an hour dodging vehicles in heavy traffic, surprising many drivers.

Witnesses posted pictures and video of the male ostrich named Tadori on social media, after he broke free from a zoo named Bug City and found himself trotting speedily past and across traffic, a local policeman said.

Police and a local fire department captured the bird using a net at a car park about 2.6km from the zoo, located about half an hour south of Seoul.

The four-year-old ostrich was safe and returned to the zoo in stable condition, zoo owner Choi Yun-joo told Reuters.

"His only friend, a female ostrich Tasooni, passed away about a month ago. Guess that has been tough on Tadori," Choi said.

Baltimore bridge collapses after ship collision - CNA

It was not immediately clear if the Baltimore port operations were impacted due to the bridge collapse.

The port's private and public terminals handled 847,158 autos and light trucks in 2023, the most of any US port. The port also handles farm and construction machinery, sugar, gypsum and coal, according to a Maryland government website.

The 2.6km-long, four-lane bridge spans the Patapsco River southwest of municipal Baltimore.

It opened in 1977 and carries more than 11 million vehicles a year, or about 31,000 a day.

It is a major part of the road network around Baltimore, an industrial city on the US East Coast next to the capital Washington.

The Maryland Transportation Authority told drivers to avoid the bridge, part of the I-695 interstate highway, which it called an "active scene".

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr both said they were aware of the incident and that rescue efforts were underway.

"Please pray for those impacted," Olszewski posted on X.

US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said on social media that he was in contact with the mayor of Baltimore and the governor of Maryland, and had offered federal help.

Malaysia minimart executives charged over 'Allah' socks - CNA

KK Super Mart has apologised for the socks, saying it viewed the matter "seriously" and had taken action to stop the sale immediately.

Supplier Xin Jian Chang had also issued an apology, saying the "problematic socks were part of a larger shipment of 18,800 pairs ordered" from a company based in China.

It said there were "only five pairs of socks" that had the sensitive word.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Masri Mohamad Daud told reporters the next hearing will be on Apr 29. The five executives were freed on bail.

Islam is the official religion in Malaysia, and Malay-Muslims make up over two-thirds of the country's 34 million people.

Race and religion are thorny issues in the country which witnessed deadly racial riots in 1969.

Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar in his rebuke last week reminded Malaysians to ensure social harmony by refraining from discussing sensitive issues on religion, race and royalty.

He said errors regarding religion and race could not be allowed "whether intentional or not".

No let-up in Gaza war despite UN ceasefire resolution - CNA

"OBSCENE DISTORTION"

In Rafah, Palestinians welcomed the UN vote and called for the United States to use its influence on Israel to secure a ceasefire.

Bilal Awad, 63, said Washington must "stand against an attack on Rafah, and support the return of the displaced to their cities".

Ihab al-Assar, 60, expressed hope that "Israel will comply" with the Security Council.

Israel has labelled its operations "precise operational activities" and said it has taken care to avoid harm to civilians, but aid agencies have voiced alarm about non-combatants caught up in the fighting.

Elsewhere in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli military said Monday it was battling militants around two hospitals and reported killing about 20 fighters around Al-Amal over the previous day in close-quarters combat and air strikes.

Palestinians living near Al-Shifa, the territory's main hospital, have reported corpses in the streets, constant bombardment and the rounding up of men who are stripped to their underwear and questioned.

Israel's military said it had detained about 500 militants "affiliated with" Hamas and Islamic Jihad, another militant group, during its operation at Al-Shifa.

The fighting came as an independent UN-appointed expert, Francesca Albanese, said there were "reasonable grounds to believe" Israel's actions in Gaza had met the threshold for "acts of genocide".

Israel rejected Albanese's report, due to be presented to the UN's Human Rights Council on Tuesday, as an "obscene inversion of reality".

UN Security Council demands immediate Gaza ceasefire for first time as US abstains - CNA

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations Security Council on Monday (Mar 25) demanded an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages after the United States abstained from the vote.

The remaining 14 council members voted for the resolution, which was proposed by the 10 elected members of the body.

"The Palestinian people has suffered greatly. This bloodbath has continued for far too long. It is our obligation to put an end to this bloodbath, before it is too late," Algeria's UN Ambassador Amar Bendjama told the council after the vote.

Israeli army radio reported shortly before the council meeting started that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would cancel a planned delegation to Washington if the US did not veto the resolution.

Washington had been averse to the word ceasefire earlier in the nearly six-month-old war in the Gaza Strip and had used its veto power shield US ally Israel as it retaliated against Hamas for an Oct 7 attack that Israel says killed 1,200 people.

But amid growing global pressure for a truce in the war that has killed more than 32,000 Palestinians, the US abstained from the vote on Monday to allow the Security Council to demand an immediate ceasefire for the month of Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which ends in two weeks.

Ukraine had 'no involvement' in Moscow attack: White House - CNA

WASHINGTON: Ukraine had "no involvement whatsoever" in the massacre in a Moscow concert hall that killed more than 130 people, the White House said Sunday (Mar 23), after Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested a Kyiv connection.

"ISIS bears sole responsibility for this attack. There was no Ukrainian involvement whatsoever," said White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson, using an acronym for the Islamic State group, which has claimed the attack.

There was "no" evidence that Ukraine was involved, agreed Vice President Kamala Harris in an interview with ABC News' "This Week" that was aired Sunday.

"ISIS-K is actually, by all accounts, responsible for what happened," she said.

The "K" refers to Khorasan, with the attack being claimed by the Islamic State's branch in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

At least 137 people were killed when camouflaged gunmen stormed the Crocus City Hall, in Moscow's northern suburb of Krasnogorsk, and then set fire to the building on Friday evening.

The Islamic State group on Saturday wrote on Telegram that the attack was "carried out by four IS fighters armed with machine guns, a pistol, knives and firebombs", as part of "the raging war" with "countries fighting Islam".

A video lasting about a minute and half apparently shot by the gunmen has been posted on social media accounts typically used by Islamic State, according to the SITE intelligence group.
